Jimmy 6-42. Where would England be without him? Every chance of reaching 400 wickets in the 2nd innings. Shoe in for man of series
That must surely be the end of Trott's test career so who should open against NZ? Give Lyth a chance.
Robson got a big hundred yesterday as well - plus Hales has got runs this season too - so a couple of options? England 257 (Cook 103, Moeen 58, Taylor 3-36) and 39 for 5 (Ballance 12*, Stokes 0*) lead West Indies 189 (Blackwood 85, Anderson 6-42) by 107 runs
West Indies beat England by five wickets in the 3rd test in Barbados West Indies 189 (Blackwood 85, Anderson 6-42) and 194 for 5 (Bravo 82, Blackwood 47*) - England 257 (Cook 105, Moeen 58, Taylor 3-36) and 123 (Holder 3-15, Taylor 3-33, Permaul 3-43) Series drawn 1-1
Calling West Indies "mediocre" on the eve of the Test series gave them their team talk, claimed England captain Alastair Cook.
Cook is a **** wit though. Strauss getting the ECB chairman role will be another step in the wrong direction. England cricket is quickly going down the drain. Full of too many tossers with their heads up arses. Moores is a proven useless coach however England take him back. Cook is not captain material, and always blames other people. England are too keen on having players who can play many roles instead of exceeding in one area. Broad is not international standard no more, especially when he's scared of the ball. Moeen Ali bowling is tripe and his batting average. Drop him. Stokes is another but he's young so should be kept on. Bell is coming to the end however he needs to stay for the summer. Trott is finished. Moores needs to go, bring in Alain Donald if possible. He has the right fighting spirit and Vaughan should have been ECB chairman. The board will want a yes man, just as Strauss is.
Credit to the Windies, but if Anderson isn't having an exceptional spell of bowling, England's attack looks very toothless. Rashid should have played and given the attack some variation and a spinner who is more than a part timer bowling dross two balls an over.
I think Alastair Cook is a decent guy - I'm not sure I rate his tactical nous as a captain though (but would NOT sack him before the Ashes)
England batsman Jonathan Trott has retired from international cricket. The 34-year-old returned to the Test side for the tour of the West Indies, 18 months after leaving the Ashes tour with a stress-related illness, but managed only 72 runs in six innings. "This was a tough decision but I don't feel my game is at the level needed to play for England," said Trott
Thank you for posting my 2 comments - I stand by the fact that it was good to see him back and given his record he deserved another chance However playing him as an opener has not worked - to be honest he has probably jumped before pushed as I don't think he would have been selected for the NZ series (though with Whittaker as Chairman o Selectors anything could happen). I guess now it's a decision between Lyth and Hales - depends whether they want to go with a Rogers style opener (Lyth) or a Warner style (Hales). Please tell us who you would pick so that with the benefit of hindsight we could analyse your thoughts
Cook has always been very conservative. The best captains have never been afraid to gamble and do something unorthodox - especially with their bowling attack. Waugh and Ponting also knew that your best bowlers were most likely to get a breakthrough when needed. How often did McGrath and Warne bowl in tandem when they needed something to happen. On the last day of the series, Cook bowled Anderson for four overs then held him back for 30 overs by which time WI were quite well set. He only bowled 12 overs altogether having taken wickets with the new and old ball in the first innings.
I wouldn't have picked Trott again, his head was not in the right place and he was getting on in years. What was the point in picking him? What a wasted opportunity to give Lyth, say, a tour in the WI before the big home series against Aus. Who makes these decisions and any chance they can eff off?
The selection was shoddy from start to finish. The windies bowling to us in the 2nd innings was varied and attacking, we however lack doing that. We need a bowler to put uncertainty in the batsmans head. Only Anderson can do that. Hales is doing a good job in county, but he's coming in as a 3 at the moment? Cook - class batsman, horrific captain.
Selection has not been the same since Geoff Miller stood down - James Whittaker is Chairman of Selectors now - I must admit to being underwhelmed by what he's done so far (and he was one of the idiots who made the KP situation much worse) I do think Trott deserved another chance (especially as he got runs on the Lions tour to South Africa) - however picking him as an opener has not worked. I think Lyth is the next cab on the rank given his selection for the tour. What is interesting is that the Group of Selectors pick the touring party, but when on tour the Captain and the Manager select the side - it was obvious that there were some players (like Rashid) that Cook/Moores did not trust
