I'm afraid I tend to agree with Paul Scholes - England national team is going backwards and will soon struggle to qualify for tournaments (it hasn't always gone well anyway!). If the so - called "Golden generation" of 2002 - 2008 or thereabouts could only get as far as the quarter finals, I don't see the current squad doing any better. I wonder if one of the many problems we have is psychological as in do we really believe we can beat major teams? England last beat a major team in a major tournament over a decade ago (2002 world cup v. Argentina) and we really weren't convincing against either Italy or Uruguay this time. Sorry to say I don't see how or when that particular pattern is going to change whoever the manager is.
... not for me ... if anything their egos are over inflated ... the problem is that they start believing their own hype when the reality is that success in the premier league has for many years hinged on the performances of overseas players rather than the domestic breed ... Italy and Uruguay are nor 'major teams' right now ... that was the poorest Italian side I've seen in my lifetime and Uruguay are nor as good now as they were in the last World Cup ... hence Costa Rica beat them both deservedly ... let's face it, whilst certain quarters are trying to push the 'positives' we were pretty abysmal ... we finished where we deserved to finish ... bottom of one of the poorest groups. There is hope for the future ... particularly if we come on board with the concept that a player in their early 20s can be the 'main man' ...
