Day 5 lunch. The night watchman is still watching. A certain. Draw but this is still a fascinating phase of the game. England can put the NZ bowlers through a serious amount of work here. Test 2 is only 3 days away. Win the toss and bat there and England could be laying the groundwork to winning the second test right now.
New Zealand will be disappointed to not force a win from such a dominant position, that will probably dampen their spirit too.
Heard it's forecast to rain heavily on days 4 and 5 so England really need to make New Zealand follow on if they are to win this match. New Zealand are 66-3 needing another 200 odd to avoid that.
The Bbc are reporting the deciding test as if England will have to battle to avoid the follow on, but we'll start Day 3 on a flat pitch against an aging ball. Its a bit premature, but if we get a couple of good partnerships I can see us batting to a small lead by lunch on Day 4. We could win this series yet!
Good opportunity for the young lads (Root and Bairstow) to step up and do it under a bit of pressure - if they do it will stand us in good stead for the Ashes
Shame Broad threw away his wicket as without Swann our tail is weak. Expect whether we bowl out NZ or not that England will have 4 and a bit sessions to defend. The target of 400 odd will be too much to try to chase.
I do remember England setting NZ a big total on one of these drop in pitches a few years ago - they made a good fist at getting there (Nathan Astle got a double hundred I think) These pitches don't deteriorate However, I don't think our team are playing well enough to get 400+ unless Cook/Trott get a big hundred
