I think Scotland suffer from their own success in other areas, and some alleged attitudes in football. Based on the number of openly gay MP's elected north of the border, Scotland can proudly claim to be the gayest Country on earth. Reported attitudes in football possibly deter many Scots from taking part in football.
A popular question at the time was "What time is it?", to which the answer was "Almost ten past Haffey".
People used to joke that Scotland were always home before the postcards but it's nearly twenty years since any Scots even got to send any.
Interesting to see the teams from that day. I watched the game and can't honestly recall Mick McNeil who I have just looked up and who was playing for Middlesbrough at the time. Players from Boro, Blackpool, Fulham and Wednesday. Doubt if players from those clubs would get a look in nowadays even if they were, like then, in the top flight. Dave Mackay and Denis Law, two of my favourite players, and Ian St John would have been in any England team if eligible.
Wasn't it, the first time we'd been behind at half time & gone on to win the game in a tournament, the stat mentioned?
"Just to be clear. England had never won a game at a major tournament, having been behind at half-time. Cheers." - Lineker
This is by no means intended to ridicule, but is a genuine question. Why do all Scotsmen have ginger hair and have a yearning to cross dress?
Look, I think we all need to lay off the Scots, did you know they have NEVER lost a knock out game at a world cup or european championships, That is truly enviable form.
To be fair they had a really tough group in 1978. How could they be expected to beat the likes of Peru and Iran?
That's bollocks, we were losing to Cameroon in the knock out stages at Italia 90. Lineker should know, he scored 2 pens in that match to get us through!
