With the recent withdrawals from the squad, what are people's opinion on the starting XI for the first group game?

My Team: 4-2-3-1.

Hart
Johnson - Cahill - Terry - Cole

Milner - Parker

Walcot - Gerrard - Young

Welbeck

My justification for choosing Welbeck ahead of Carroll is based upon the fact that on Rooney's return, 3 of the attacking 4 play regularly together for their club and form a cohesive unit that know each others game well; and generally perform well together. Until that point, Gerrard is the perfect replacement for Rooney in that position. If Rooney comes back, I would move Gerrard into the 2 in place of Milner.

Thoughts?

Hart
Johnson---Jagielka---Lescott---Cole
Jones---Henderson
Chamberlain---Gerrard---Young
Carroll

I'm not a huge fan of Henderson, but he's there and he's a more positive option than Milner or Parker who will just sit in front of the defence. Jones and Henderson will make up a fair bit of ground and allow Gerrard an opportunity to express himself. I think we need to encourage expression and openness, take our hammering by Germany/Spain/France/Holland on the chin and start to evolve.

Hart

Richards --Smalling---Ferdinand---Cole

Cleverley---Carrick

Johnson---Gerrard----Young

Sturridge

If only our manager wasn't such an idiot.

I think the OP is referring to the best team from the players that have been selected. That rules out Richards, Smalling, Ferdinand, Cleverly, Carrick, Johnson and Sturridge, so your team doesn't stack up. I'll take a wild stab in the dark that you don't agree with Hodgson's selections and you didn't want him as the manager in the first place. Bad news I'm afraid mate. He is the manager and his selections have been made.

I hold zero hope for us at all... Henderson <doh>

my team would be

Hart
Johnson Cahill Terry Cole
Jones Parker
Milner Gerrard Young
Carroll

Bench: Ox, Walcott, wellbeck to come one for Milner carroll and jones

I've come around to your way of thinking in the last few days. Though Cahill can't start, I'd still prefer starting Young with Welbeck, especially as I'm a big non-beliver in Carrol.

For what it's worth:

Hart
Johson-Jagielka-Lescott-Cole
Parker
Young-Milner-Gerrard-Henderson
Welbeck

Rooney to in for Milner for the 3rd game.

Makes me chuckle how some people claim to know anything about football, then have Glen Johnson and Theo Walcott on the same wing !

Hilarious really. Johnson is great going forwards, but not the best defensively. Milner has to play infront of Johnson, it's the only way I'd say.

Some even have Downing and Carroll in the same team.

Wonder how that worked out over at Liverpool last season.

Looks like it's:

Hart

Johnson - Terry - Lescott - Cole

Milner - Parker - Gerrard

Young - Welbeck - AOC

Can't argue much with that from the squad Hodgson's selected - would prefer Richards at RB and Joe Cole in place of Milner.
Also Jagielka in place of Terry.

For what it's worth, I take France to win 2-0 or 2-1.
