I'm sorry but this short sighted illusion that the media and fans have created that England aren't still **** I find astonishing. We had the easiest run in a world cup we've ever had, lost 3 times and failed to beat Colombia without their best player. I my opinion when I looked at our group and potential run quarters or semis was not asking for much. All that bollocks about resting players and losing to Belgium was a joke when we played Croatia their team had played 90 mins more than ours, the game went to extra time and we lost they finished stronger. If it was Sven Capello or anyone not on with the boys they'd have raped him. I'm going to once again go against popular belief and say Southgate is not going to succeed and as soon as the idiots realise it in the media ,so will the even more brainless and short sighted fans and they'll start ripping poor Southgate apart We've got a **** side This notion that in 4 years our team will even better because they're a young side is once again short sighted because other countries will undoubtedly do better also. The likes of Germany Spain Holland Italy Portugal and others had shockers some not even qualifying. We failed to take our chance Southgate failed
I thought England were unlucky last night but I'm not convinced anyone could do a better job than Southgate is doing currently. With the exception of a few, most of the squad don't play enough minutes at the highest level. Granted, Southgate is focusing on youth and because of that he needs more time, but the aforementioned problem will always remain. It's a thankless task really, but Gareth Southgate is doing a decent job. He has the courage to change his tactics / formation and the players. I can't think of anyone who could do any better right now. I believe GS is trying to build a club mentality with England, and the very best of luck to him.
On recent performances, we are roughly on a par with Spain and Croatia. We lost against Spain but a goal was wrongly disallowed. We drew with Croatia and looked probably the better team. Being at this level is about the best that we could reasonably have hoped when Southgate was appointed. GS hasn't displayed any tactical genius but he is thinking for himself, which is nice, and seems to have fostered a good team spirit. As has been said, I don't know who we could bring in to improve the situation. A series of managers with great club credentials have done failed. GS has made some progress since he came in. He is largely responsible for the progress of the youth teams. Sticking with him seems sensible at the moment.
I think Southgate has done better than I expected. the thing I like is he is wasting no time in exploiting the youth set up. He has quickly realised our next generations have already proved better than their foreign counterparts. So he has made clear he wants them getting game time at club level and he will pick them. I like that he is developing the side tactically too. He got after Croatia in the WC and mullered them first half. Reality is they should have buried the game first half. The other night we adopted an even more high energy passing and made Croatia look poor with the ball. They looked like an England side asked to play out from the back under Hodgson. It was Pep esque the way we were cutting off simple passes out by pressing with numbers right up the side of the box on goal kicks. They ended up going long or losing possession under pressure. The only concern is we didn't show the killer instinct. Hit the woodwork twice and Rashford missed two absolute sitters. You can't afford to do that. Southgate has made a good start as England manager. It will be interesting to see if he can integrate the likes of Brewster, Foden, Sancho etc and take that next step.
