Two things that seem to spring to mind over Mr Cowie was as I remember his quote I think around the time we met Norwich in the league cup final was that he wished our fans were as good as Newcastle's and another time when he suggested something along the lines it was better financially to play in the second division with full houses rather than less than full houses in the first. Dont want to be shot down but this is something that sticks in the back of my mind. Maybe someone else can recall this and if it is as I remember that is not putting the club first more like being out for ones own gvain and reward
Nowt wrong with being a capitalist, but I aways got the impression that he was a hard-nosed bar steward. Nice to read about his love of Sunderland in the OP though, so maybe he wasn't all bad. Anyway, as Syd says, he's dead now so RIP Tom. "Every man's death diminishes me, for I am concerned with mankind. Therefore, send not to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee..." John Donne
I do remember him having a dig at Bob Murray for not spending when he was chairman. Murray responded by saying he would sell the club lock stock and barrel to Cowie for one pence, if Cowie then promised to spend the remainder of the clubs value (Then 12 Million I think) in the transfer market. Cowie did **** all. I always admired Bob for that.
If he had brought in Brian clough in 1985 instead of big lawrie who knows what we could have achieved. And just a note to Darlington supporters to get to the stadium of light on saturday with collection buckets and hopefully we can help save your club, as i cannot find your not606 site. and make sure you can prove somehow you are a genuine supporter, because there are bogus collectors out there.
