North Yorkshire.
Still just 20, had a failed loan at Hartlepool, contract up next summer. Uncle Tone seems to like him and he's often seen training with the first team in videos despite being eligible for the u21 team.

Does he have a realistic chance of being a first team player here in the future?

Without having seen loads of him, I'd have to say no. No disrespect to Hartlepool (and it could have been the wrong club and the wrong time) but if he cannot get into their team, what hope does he have of making it here?
Maybe his best bet is to get a loan to a top end L2 side, play regularly in a team that is winning most weeks and see what comes from it.

I'm amazed he didn't go on loan this summer.

I don't know him at all but I know he's had a lot in his personal life. So I'm glad he's still at the club and developing / learning if this is where he wants to be. But I think this time next year he will be playing for a League 2 side.

Always find this hard to judge as some players look absolute world beaters then fade into obscurity, others don't look so great and then develop in their mid twenties and become really good, I think it sounds like he is in and around the first team picture and maybe needs a good loan move to a team who will allow him to play and develop.
If you think about it as kids we do a lot of growing up between 16 and 26 and change from boys to men in a short period of time maybe his change will be like this only take a little longer or it may be as scout says that he is not going to develop much more than the level we see him at now.

Been playing well in the 23s by all accounts but realistically when everyone’s fit he won’t make the bench for the first team

Don't know about the lad, but I know from a couple of Pool's fans who told me that he was never given a sniff by the manager even when they were struggling badly. Seemed to favour all those Scots players he brought down.

Think I'm on tbe right one mind! But not every player flowers at 18, or 19. Some take another year or two, and maybe that's the case here.

Quick update on Ellis.

He has sat on the bench in league games 8 times this season, the last time in December. He was an important starter for the u21s until January and hasn’t appeared in the last 3 u21 squads. All the tell tale signs of being released, unless he has an undisclosed injury.
