When you do beginner’s Economics you get all the little charts and theory about why immigration is good but there’s little real life nuance to it. It assumes people come to join the work force, they’ll either have kids who do so too and will possibly head home to retire.

There are bad migrants and good migrants. When there was the big Eastern European influx we over indexed in the good. Windrush similar though neither were perfect. Now we’re over indexing in bad and getting both emigration and relatively few productive immigrants. I find it a bit disingenuous to use an argument that used to be very valid but clearly isn’t any more.

And yet our workforce, economy, pensions forecast, NHS, and countering an ageing population demands that we need immigration.

There's an argument for getting the right kind of people we need, but the basic tenant is sound

That you aren’t wrong. It’s not the most articulate argument but we’ve long reached a point where it’s a fair question to ask what sort of benefit the country is getting from migration as a whole. I’m not sure the old economic argument stacks up now.

Though there’s not much you can do about a second generation person plotting to blow up a synagogue or a grandfather needing an interpreter to understand he’s been found guilty of raping his grandchild.

****ed if I know how to fix it.

That was it. Had to cycle to some woman’s house which was about a mile away to pick up the papers. All I really remember was there was about 30 kids in her house, it seemed like carnage!

Never had a paper round, though I’d occasionally help my mate with his. When I was about 14 I had a pools collection round. Went round with a little book, knocking on doors and collecting subs and that week’s entries. I got to keep a % of whatever I collected, but I’d always overspent that by the Monday when the boss came round to tally up. Usually had to ask my dad to bail me out - he was a bit resentful that me having a job was costing him money.

The UK has an ageing population and a skills shortage. If we carry on as we are, we'll end up with a workforce that can't afford to pay for the pensions or healthcare of all the old folk who are living longer with more complex needs. We'll also end up with key areas of our economy faltering due to lack of talent and we'll miss out on innovative opportunities for UK businesses to thrive.

There's an argument to get the right people in. But the media narrative is unfortunately dominated by Farage esque 'Send em home!' nonsense which filters down to Tik Tok and X and then you have a country of Sucky's frothing about suicide bombers.

The only positive about lefty loonies who think the whole world is the same with the same values that can all live in the uk for free is that they’ve been given the podium for so long that the rise of the right is inevitable

So again turkeys voting for Xmas <laugh>

Of course there is. But we increasingly don’t. There’s no point bringing in young people who aren’t a net gain to society simply to reduce the share of the population above 65 on paper. All developed countries have an obligation to give asylum to people who need it but that avenue is clearly being abused and society pays, financially or otherwise, when that isn’t netted out many times over by French bankers or nice Korean students.

Asylum is a different issue.

We need more skilled and unskilled workers.

That is the bottom line.
