I'm not sure it's a smokescreen, as such. I think there's some daft optimism at Newcastle disguised as ambition. I've already mentioned the names we went for - which on paper look great - but we were never going to get them. There's a lack of awareness at the club as to who we are today. When City swept up big names they did it on huge salaries, which can't be done these days, so we just don't seem to be joining the dots. I think having such a small exec team isn't helping. Saudi's are no doubt egging on the "we want the best" narrative, but Newcastle really need to be adding 5 or 6 £30m+ players, rather than spending such a massive amount on Ekitike. We just can't compete at the top end, financially, in spite of what Howe's done for us on the pitch.

Why do you think he will hardly play football at Liverpool? Jota is dead, Nunez might as well be, Salah tends to play wide right, so it only leaves Gakpo as competition. Suspect he will get plenty of football there.
It looks like Liverpool are going to have alot of new players to blood into the squad this season. I suspect they will buy a new CB, a new LW as Diaz wants out and another striker if anyone takes a punt on that donkey nunez.
3 times the club has because he's an elite player in the making. It's just a shame psg and Liverpool wanted him. Big clubs want top players. We had a go and have to try for the best to succeed... On to the next one.

Yeah I've seen toon fans using that mental gymnastic, but he had considerably more ahead of him at psg... Messi and mbappe for example, but he is literally Liverpools 1st choice striker, so it's a totally different situation. It's just how butt hurt fans deal with rejection.... It's imo easier to just say he chose the best move he had available and got more money.
