Using those figures, since January 2008 we've spend 35 million more than we've recouped.

In the same time period Sunderland are estimated to have spent between £100m-£120m more than they have recouped on transfers alone. That is ignoring loan fees and signing on deals for free transfers, both of which Sunderland have used much more than Newcastle and will be comfortably in the tens of millions. So Sunderland are one of the better Premiership sides I assume? If they go down they will win every game surely as their outlay dwarves ours!
