Not quite sure about the question of whether the border will be in Calais or in Kent is really relevant. I do not have statistics for this (haven't found them yet) but I would imagine that the Eurostar carries at least as many passengers as those who travel by ferry. In which case passport controls are in Paris, or in Brussels prior to getting onto the train - if these are not carried out then the same procedure would have to be shifted to St.Pancras in London (as opposed to Kent), and also a separate deal would have to be done with Belgium.

How would you know if those countries have the same issues? How much time have you spent in Italy? I lived in Milan for 6 months and travelled there and Madrid for nearly 2 years either side of that more than 20 years ago. Even then there were parts of Milan that were almost no-go areas because of Albanian and Romanian criminal gangs - my favourite restaurant in Milan even had security on the car park because of break in's and car jacking. Taxi drivers used to jump some traffic lights because they tried to break in and steal your lap-top bag.
