I adored Cruyff, the Ajax and Holland teams he played for, and everything they stood for and stand for now. He represented more than anyone else, including Stan, what I love about football and what I want to see every week - outrageous skill, vision, arrogance, competitiveness and end product. Jago, Sexton, Venables and Bowles learned from them and brought a little bit of Total Football to West London. I spent hours as a 12 year old practicing the Cruyff turn, which I executed successfully in match conditions the grand total of once.

Huge respect and thanks to the most intelligent footballer I have had the privilege of watching.

Wonderful player, what a team Holland had in the 70s
RIP Johan and thanks for some wonderful memories
The only time that I saw him live was as one of the Ajax team who lost to Arsenal in the Fairs Cup semi final in 1969/70 and Ajax were well beaten that day
Travesty that he wasn't a world cup winner

He was THE reason to watch the Euros & the World Cup in the 70s. Legend. RIP and condolences to his family.

RIP to a true footballing legend.
Total football - the phrase which I believe Dave Sexton used when he we nearly won the old First Division Title all those years ago - he got from watching and going to see how the famous Ajax side trained.

Such a shame. Johan Cruyff is a true footballing legend. I wished I'd had seen him play in real life but was too young back then. RIP Johan <rose>

I make no apologies for copying what I have posted on Report. It took me long enough to write!

RIP Johan, the greatest player I've seen play. If I was younger I might accept that Messi is on a par or even better, but nobody ever compares with your hero's when you are young!

I never had the pleasure/privilege of watching Hidgekuti(sp) & only saw Pele in a friendly at Villa Park. Cruyff was IMO, at least a class (probably a league) above Maradonna & Best.

He was also the inspiration behind Ajax & the wonderful Holland side of that time. Ajax first came to prominence in '67 when they scored five against Liverpool in the European Cup. A tie that 'pool were expected to win at a canter! This was soon followed by a UEFA Cup win & three consectutive Champions trophies.

They were magnificent! Only Real in the '50's & this centuries Barcelona run them close. Cruyff missed there first champions win at Wembley due to a brojken leg. The worship he received as he walked round the ground on his crutches was even greter than the team received!

Thank you Sir.

Shows how good my memory is! It was Krol who missed the Wembley match because of a broken leg.
