An interesting piece from a couple of years back about David Woodfield. http://www.wolvesheroes.com/2009/01/20/at-home-away/
Hoping we will be an `M` club soon with Murray and Massey ! But to keep your `w`s going I give you Matty Whichelow
Lenny, no matter how much you need to know about your enemy, peering up the skirt of a jock should never be considered. Just look what it did to The Burpers...
Quite by chance I play golf with Duncan Welbourne's nephew, small world... Suprised no one has mentioned his nickname 'Chopper', very apt as he was a cert for the crunching tackle, guess you were all too busy looking up Malkys skirt!
MM did mention the Nickname during his speech Youve given me an idea for one of the auction items for charity! Highest bidder gets to look up MM`s Skirt!!
Micky Walker also played for us whilst Welbourne and Williams were playing, but he joined later in their time with us. The other Ws in that era from memory were Ron Walker, the reserve centre half, and Alan Williams. It would be interesting to see how a full back pairing of Welbourne and Williams would perform today. I suspect not so well. They were both great stalwarts of the club and automatically selected each week but Watford have improved since then. We oldies forget and the youngsters don't realise how far the club has advanced since the arrival of GT and Elton
NZ, my first game was March 78, so I find that my copy of the Official Centenary book is as useful today as it was 20 years ago. It also means that my son can appreciate the history of the club and that any grandchildren I may be lucky enough to have (not yet, I'm younger than MM) will be well versed in the ways of the Hornet.
I really like seeing Kids being brought up the right way! Gives you a little tingly feeling and a warm glow well done jsybaz!
I remember Keith Eddy - think he was the first of a number of players transferred between us and Sheffield Utd
Actually in the late 60's era, the first player to be transferred from the Horns to Sheffield Utd. was Tony Currie in early 1968 after scoring 9 goals in his first (and only) 17 league appearances for Watford, including 2 hat-tricks and a double - all at Vicarage Road. Next player to be transferred to the Blades was Stewart Scullion in the 1971 close season, then Eddy in the 1972 close season, followed by Colin Franks in 1973. (Scullion came back to Watford in 1973). Incidentally, strictly speaking Barry Hartle (of 1959-60 promotion fame) was the first player in the 60's to be transferred from Watford to Sheffield Utd. (in 1960).
Do you remember Barry Hartle, Vic? A lot of fuss was made when he left, but Tommy Harmer was brought in as a replacement. The charmer to my mind was well past his best by then and did not do as well for us as Barry had.
I do remember Hartle, he was so slight that his shirt always seemed at least 3 sizes to big for him - he was rumoured to eat a steak each day to boost his physique.....never seemed to work though. The contrast between him and Holton was startling to say the least. I also remember Harmer - came from Spurs - a version of Nordin Wooter with twice the dribble, half the pace and the same end-result. His favourite trick, when Watford had a free kick off outside the penalty area, was to line up the tall players (including our defenders) at the far post for the high chip which the goalkeeper was supposed to move across to cover. He then attempted to curl the ball directly inside the near post whilst looking towards the far post! Very odd-looking. It worked only once (against Coventry City in a 7-2 win at the end of the 60-61 season) right in front of me at the Rookery end. He then kept trying it at every opportunity, even though the word had obviously got around the Division and the goalies were simply picking the ball out of the air with no attacker near! He never scored like that again and the other players got very frustrated with the 'tactic'. He left at the end of the 61-62 season.......
Vic - thanks - when I wrote that about Eddy I kind of knew I was wrong about him being first but did not have time to go and look up dates for Currie, Scullion and the like - Eddy just seemed to be older
