I think that Gazza is ready to make the step up to permanent back up GK. I was quite impressed with his performances for the U21s at the back end of last season. He is 24 now and if he is not deemed good enough by the club now perhaps it's best that he moves on.
I think McGovern`s contract had run down, and he didn`t want to sign another. Good keeper, but not sure if he`d PL quality. Not the tallest either.
I know he's getting on and it's not our style, but could Myhill come in and do a stint as backup for us? He was astonishing at West Brom, for a second keeper. Unless he's leaving West Brom because he wants to be first in line somewhere...
Slightly disappointed because I was hoping that he'd stay and be our no.2 again this season. But at the end of the day, that's all it would have been, our no.2. I'm sure that the club won't find it too difficult to find a different (but equally as adequate) no.2. But no promoting Gazza to that role, please.
He was good at kicking and handling, pretty terrible at shot stopping and one-on-one's. Good luck to him on more money, but we won't miss him at all IMO.
I doubt he is on more money (perhaps more than we offered if we were looking to sign him) was supposedly on a massive wage at Fulham, probably the only reason he went there in the first place. Was seen as a pretty big coup at the time iirc
I know all clubs need no.2 GK's and it's part of football, but I've never understood it from a player's perspective. Some number 2's are actually quality keepers! Ok they earn decent money to sit on their arse for the season, but wouldn't you rather earn less money (still life changing to any normal person) and play first team football and actually enjoy playing the game you love, which you spent your whole youth training for?
Mark Schwarzer still needs a new club. And for the past two years of course, whoever has stuck him on their bench has won the league.
If he's gone there to be first choice (I'm assuming he will be) then I can see him challenging for the England #1 within the next 5 years or so.
IMHO based on watching both live quite a lot recently Gazzaniga v Dan Bentley Shot stopping 7 v 8 6 yard box dominance 5 v 4 1 on 1 blocking 6 v 5 Decisions in distribution 7 v 5 Long ball accuracy 9 v 6 Potential to improve 7 v 8
That's near enough. Having seen Dan at close quarters after a season and a half with SUFC though I'd rate him better than Paulo at box dominance and 1-on-1s.
