Peter Taylor appeared to get us two promotions on the back of 1-0 victories. Now that was hard to watch. Once we scored, we then played the rest of the match constantly trying to clear the ball out of our own half only for it to come straight back at us. And the favourite shout for about two seasons was "Push Out !". Obviously followed by some very colourful adjectives.
That's a bit harsh on PT. We scored plenty of goals in those 2 promotion seasons. 11 players back at corners was always a gripe with fans as the ball just simply came back after it had been cleared.
We don't get that many 1-0 victories do we? It's more the 1 goal defeats where we don't attack for 85 minutes and then Bruce blames the ref or the defence that piss me off.
I think to get Hull City, you need to get the fans. Go back a decade or more, and it was like being a member of an exclusive club. The humour was mainly gallows, but dominant. Move on to more recent times, and everyone's an expert pundit, at the expense of fun and humour. Chuck into the mix the manic demands for splashing the cheque book and then grumbles about being in debt, it's all about results then we demand to entertained, and welcome to the world of the modern football fan. Where success and failure seem to be vicarious and sensitivity is no longer testosterone fueled.
