It's all about placing horses in races they are capable of winning for me and some of them are dreadful at it.

Couldn’t agree more. A trainer has 2 very, very different jobs. One is training the animal to peak when it arrives on the racecourse and the other is placing it in the right race. It is amazing how many aren’t capable of the latter.

Younger trainers with any sense will often rely on the guidance of other handlers or retired trainers re the placing of animals. This is a skill that you can’t just pick up overnight and even the re-incarnation of Pegasus won’t win if its placed in a totally unsuitable heat.
 
John Ferguson has an 18% strike rate in UK hurdles races so far this season. Last season it was a pretty miraculous 36%. Why on earth would you ignore his runners in these type of races? do you think they are overbet? They may be, but I always give them a 2nd look.
