According to Home Office data the bulk of illegals currently are from Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and the number arriving from India is also growing
This is the same Indian government that won’t support the west in the battles with Russia and still buys Russian oil because they are getting a great price on it while most others boycott it
All the economic sanctions the west thought would bring Russia to its knees is backfiring spectacularly while there are huge players like China and Russia who won’t do the decent thing
That’s reason enough to shutting the door to Indian and Chinese students too, no matter how much money they have or extended family they want to settle here
Remove them all and the ones already here and their families

Feels a bit unfair on the students and shooting ourselves in the foot given they pay an absolute fortune to both us and the universities.

Exactly, they subsidise our students, so our students costs would increase, seems a bit unnecessary to me.

Don't you mean the Ukrainian people.

    Ashton
    Absolutely no.
Folk need to forgetm isses similar to the one you point out.
We ALL need to make sacrifices - including the Indian government, Chinese and our students.
Putin's a bully of the highest order.
He loves those who weaken like Imdia as it only empowers him.

You stand up to a bully.

How exactly does booting out our current Chinese students help the fight against Putin?

I don’t disagree with anything you say here RP. The problem for me is that you have to be physically able to take on the bully otherwise you’ll simply get beaten up yourself and the bully will become even more empowered.
Our armed forces have been weakened by underfunding by successive governments - so much so that now we are so ‘powder-puff’ that if Argentina decided to have another pop at the Falkland Islands there would be precious little we could do about it.
We certainly wouldnt be able to mount a task force again to force them out - let alone take on Putins hoards.

I agree , however I can’t see how the measures you suggest in this instance is something he’d, or they’d give a hoot about. Seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face. My opinion only of course

    R&W and Ashton

Of course we're not physically able.
    Nato is. Conventionally or Nuclear.

Russia's so called highly regarded conventional forces have proved they are anything but in Ukraine resorting to attacking private citizens in there homes with long range missiles and drones, cowardly ba***ds.
It's why they are threatening nuclear option.
I grant you it's high stakes and there is no doubt Putin is evil but he (or more importantly his henchmen) aren't stupid.
Ashton, as you say, it's only my opinion.

China is a friend of Putin.
I'd do anything to prick their conscience by stopping, for example, their own from gaining the best education.
Yes it would hurt the UK, I believe it to be worth it.

What about the places that foreign students take that could be offered to British kids ?
As per usual, it’s all about money

Yes, it’s one thing we’re still extremely good at. Bright British kids will still get places and it’s good for the best to be around bright foreign kids. If I was going to uni now rather than 15 years ago I either wouldn’t have bothered with the prices they are now or gone abroad if possible. Presumably without foreign students it would be even less affordable for our brightest working class kids.

Blair's only reason getting kids to Uni was to keep them off the unemployed list.
When I was 18 only the very best, not me, went to Uni and free as well !
Now any Tom Dick or Harry ends up at Uni.
And they wonder why they come out drowning in debt.

Not a shred of common sense between them.

A lot of jobs require a degree now. I don’t know how old you are but probably far more than when you were that age. £27k now for a three year degree plus living expenses plus the wages you forego by not working full-time for those years so it’s a lot if you aren’t going to get a job that’s worth it afterwards but then uni is about a lot more than the piece of paper you get at the end.

Unemployment is low so it’s probably a good thing kids are trying to better themselves. Without a doubt some would be better off learning a trade or starting at the bottom somewhere but there’s hardly a wealth of opportunities at entry-level these days either compared to decades ago.

Problem is you need a degree for farting nowadays...all a bit fluffy to what they were and meant ..I much prefer proper apprenticeships in real jobs...maybe it would give us the skills to make our own components rather than rely on China

So why go to Uni ?
I don't understand the logic other than they think it's THE thing to do.
They're just misguided and led by the nose, they need a C change in attitude/enlightenment and adopt a work/life balance.
And wtf is a Gap year travelling pissing it up round the world.

As I said I don’t think I’d have bothered now and I did what would have been considered a worthy degree at a good uni and got a lot out of it beyond the degree including a year abroad so it’s a huge shame if working class kids are being put off by the huge costs of it.

But loads of reasons, although I’m not doubting the opportunity to get regularly pissed and shag around is a big appeal as it would have been for those lucky enough to go when it was free/cheap. For many it’s their only route into what they want to do. Others probably see the jobs available at 18, if any, and have a crack at bettering themselves.

Lots of kids do very worthy gap years working or volunteering or just seeing the world. Once you start work you aren’t getting those experiences again until you retire if you’re lucky.

All my family have degrees apart from me. I’m the lowest qualified (academically).
I’m also the biggest earner (for now - my youngest is catching up fast!!)
It was a different world when I started climbing the ladder though, back in the mid 1980s.
It’s not easy to get into direct employment with a blue chip company now without either a degree or experience. It’s easy enough to get agency work but difficult to cross over from there to being directly employed.
I’m glad I’m not starting out in work today.

One of my hobbies brings me into close contact with students from 6 or 7 UNI's ... very few actually do degree's that mean anything! other than the paper it written on.
In year 3 a lot wish they hadnt bothered as the party's and hectic social "swapping" etc had become a expensive way to get a leg over and have a "good time" .... A few do actually go on to sophisticated jobs, and a few actually have a degree pertinent to that line of work.
The gap year is often wasted by some although they do get to see some of the world on a low budget and non touristy area's .. some take up projects in "foreign countries" that for a small % will actually convert to a full time job there, or be useful getting a job with itS EXPERIENCE on the CV!
For 90% of them it is a waste of time they take advantage of "loan" knowing it is unlikely their jobs on minimal wage or just a few pounds above it will never lead to repaying it!

Good news for common sense for once
So now put Edward Colston back on his plinth in the centre and laugh at the entitled 18-24 year old cry babies who are still too stupid to recognise the truth
