This all the way. Ashley isn't all of a sudden going to completely change "strategy" with Newcastle just because we qualified for some other kind of European competition. As Hacky says, it might be easier to get players - we'd be more attractive, it wouldn't be such a crowbar job in trying to pry them away, there'd be more digging the heels in from our targets if it meant entering the CL. Arguably we'd be a more attractive proposition to emerging talent who wouldn't want to "do a Rodwell/Sinclair/Dzeko/etc." - they know they could be front and centre in the biggest competition the world has to offer. But we still wouldn't see droves appearing.

The CL would be an incredible boost for NUFC; Ashley wouldn't even have to invest all that much, I don't think. I reckon the positive impact on a club like ours is far greater than, say, the negative impact it's had on Liverpool, Spurs and now could have on Man U.

That's the kind of comment that ignites an argument

To me it depends on the fans! If we were to qualify then I would like to see it as a U21's tournament - they get some game time and we get to see what they can do - maybe push for a squad place and would then have no impact upon our league form. Could also play fringe first team players as a way of keeping up their fitness. Oh and of course play Anita each game seeing as Pards doesn't want to normally play him

No. We will earn more by finishing in the top 10 on a regular basis, besides, the club have already stated that Cup competitions are not as important as the Barclays Premier League.

If we do qualify, the club will simply not invest in enough quality players to make us regulars in the Europa League.

If we don't qualify, we run the very real risk of the top players wanting out.

    Catch 22? :)

No brainer. Yes. Whats the point unless we try and finish as high up the league as possible.

Yes- lets go for it. If we have another ****ty season next year, it will still have been worth it. As long as we don't relegated, we could follow a good pattern that seems to be being set under Pard's tenure

Almost impossible to disagree with this. What is the point if it is not to finish as high up the table as possible ? Should we start deliberately losing games to avoid finishing in the European slots ? A pox upon the house of any supporter who would rather see his team finish 8th than 5th.

Agree with all of this <applause>

If we're not playing to get into Europe does that mean that once we look like we might get a top 6/7 position at the end of the season Pards will tell them not to try too hard for fear of getting into Europe?

Nope, Pardew will push hard as he can. Then, when required, he will point to the fact that he got us to finish 5th (not forgetting his Managerial Awards that season) but still Mike Ashley would not back him by going to the next level.

It is starting to look like a pattern forming and it's utterly frustrating <grr>

But think of the accounts, FFS. Think of the SUSTAINABILITY and stuff. I support prudent accounting AND Newcastle United - and you should, too.
