Ferrari design things not to fail, but for all my life, with the exception of the Schumacher years, it's all they've ever done
Maybe they should subject the turbo's to the same test as a jet engine, except rather than use frozen chickens as ammunition, go for something smaller, say deep fried hamsters to fire at the turbo's?
The chicken test (it's not supposed to be frozen chickens) is to simulate a bird strike on an engine and to test it's integrity to the damage sustained. They also test jet engines for containment with a blade failure. They use an explosive charge at the root of the blade and fire the charge at a certain rpm. The cowling must contain all the blades. They must not come through the cowling as that would mean potential damage to the fuselage! Turbos are so small it might be difficult to reproduce but I am sure they could create a shaft failure to disconnect the compress or turbine at full speed.
It was meant as a tongue-in-cheek comment. You're right about the frozen chickens though, I was thinking of a story about some engine tests that kept failing as the chickens were being shot straight through the engines and out the back, reason being they had not thawed the chickens before firing them!
No problem. I worked for about 10 years testing both jet engines, afterburners and gas turbines so I too had heard the frozen chicken stories. I very much doubt the story is true knowing the complexities involved in testing but it a funny thing to think of
The thought of a chicken coming out of the arse-end of a jet engine is an amusing thought, as would be the person (probably a apprentice or janitor!) who suggested thawing the chickens out first! Would have been one of those golden silence moments as the penny dropped!
I hit a massive buzzard on the way to work a few years back... It's how I imagine hitting a frozen turkey must feel. So just throw a buzzard at the turbine... If it doesn't explode, then Ferrari are good.
LOL, Ferrari are the most successful Formula 1 team in the history of the sport, and they were the most successful before Schumacher joined.
They were, but the turbo cars were prone to failing a lot, especially when they tried to extract more power from the engines. The last turbo era was in fact their least successful period ever from 1981 - 1988.
1979-2000 WDC's: 0 as I said, for all MY life with the exception of the Schumacher years, (and the very dubious Raikonnen win), Ferrari have done nothing but fail.
