You need to improve ten fold before you will win the league. Not impossible but close enough as far as next season goes. Top 4 is your target, re-establishing liverpool as a CL team and making the last 2 years a distant memory. Reckon you will get top 5 and whoever gets 4th will do so by the skin of their teeth. Your games against Spurs and Arsenal are your biggest games next season I feel. Results in those games come May would very well decide who gets 4th.
I wouldn't go that far. We're a good way off, but not ten times away! (Although I assume it was just a figure of speech) As it stands, if we forget about the 5 teams that finished above us, I believe we have the best first 11 of the rest. And it's the rest we really need to improve against (we generally do pretty well against those above us, and are let down by poor results to the likes of Wigan, Blackpool etc.), which is more a matter of adding depth than adding quality. Of course, we'll need to do the latter too, to keep pace with those above us.
When you make essentially the same point as you did last night and still get it wrong - the U21s tournement is on-going and the European window does not officially open until the 1st July then you are not contributing to debate you are merely sounding-off. If you took exception to my response well so be it. It was written sarcastically and meant to be read as such. As for having a pop at newcastle united then why not? The comment I made was and remains true. If you need that explained to you then I will do so: You have an owner who wants to sell the club but can't due to his inflated perception of its real value. You have an owner who rewards a manager who got you promotion with the sack. Of your 2 best players last season, 1 (Nolan) has left and the other (Barton) has made clear that he wants away At least 2 other senior players are likely to leave over the summer. Your 2 latest acquisitions are extreemely risky. One failed a medical only the day before you signed him and the other , to quote Harry Redknapp has such a history of injury that he doesn't know what's holding him together Now when you put that lot together then you have a picture not of planned development but of a club that is in trouble. That is not having a 'pop' that is putting the picture straight. So, I put it back to you that its people like you who demand that they have the right to say what they like on another club's board who need to think about what discussion really means.
Btw, there is no comparison between Hodgson and Rafa at all. Rafa left Valencia having won the Spanish league twcie with them and qualifying for the Champions league, as well as winning the Uefa Cup. All that in 3 years there. Hodgson has undoubtedly done well on the continent, but so did Steve McClaren with Twente. He's good at getting the best out of an average group of players. Sadly, when it comes to better players, he can't improve them.
Glad to see that you,ve finally come to your senses and can admit that our games against united will merely be more points collection for us as you will not be in a position to contend.
Doubt anyone will be losing sleep, need to prove ourselves again personally i feel were moving in the right direction but ill reserve judgement untill we have completed our transfers. Although Dalglish has stabalised the club truth of the matter is we dont know how he'll perform for a whole season, personally i look forward to supporting him the whole way ! My only hope is that the impending transfers work out and are not a waste of money ! although saying that the fact the marveux deal fell through gave me heart that were not just signing any old tom, dick just cos there on a free we need players that are goin to be available the length of the season, players like enrique, adam & downing although wont be winning the ballon'dor any time soon, could only add something to this liverpool team which in fairness is all we need to compete in this league.
He doesn't want to sell the club and hasn't wanted to for almost two years. He took it off the market. And now we have Pardew, who has a better record than Hughton did. Nolan was not our best player by a long shot, and Barton has made clear (many times) that he actually wants to stay put, so who's the person who doesn't know what they're talking about? Apart from Nolan's goals, he's a below average CM. He's always been the weak link in our midfield play, and if we replace him with a top quality CM who can also bang a few goals in (even if it's not as many) I'll be chuffed to bits. And two other senior players are not 'likely to leave'. Again, you're talking complete nonsense. The only other player who has even made a peep about leaving is Enrique, but we've known that for months. Both free, and Ba is on a pay as you play type deal, but on-form, we know he's top class. And Marveaux didn't fail a medical at Liverpool. It was a contractual dispute. No, because as you can see there, every single thing you've just said is utter ****e and far from the truth. The club is heading in a very good direction, and if the money we have is spent wisely, it will be the strongest squad we've had in a long time. I do have a right to say what I like on another clubs board, just as you have a right to say what you like on Newcastle United's. This is one big football forum. If we support certain clubs, it doesn't mean that we're banned from giving our opinion on others. Now be quiet. Men are talking. I agree, although Arsenal is a tricky one. They could drop further down the table, or they could become a rock solid top 4 side and keep both Spurs and Liverpool out of it. It all depends on Wenger. He'll either spend a decent wedge of cash and buy the players Arsenal desperately need, or he'll watch his pennies and/or buy players he doesn't need. Whether he sells Fabregas will also have major implications. Everyone is desperate to crack those top 4 spots though. There's no doubt about it. We'll be up there one day, but for now, we'll stick to aiming for Europa.
There is a lot of nonsense spoken on these boards.Example Liverpool have to improve 10 fold.No they don't. They actually improved 10 fold when Kenny took over from Hodgson in January...with more or less the same group of players. The key to success is not having better players than the entire league,as proved by Man United whose squad lets be fair is light-years behind citys.Man for Man,City have a better squad. Its down to good management, and thats the reason why Man United won the league and City didn't.On paper,City should have blitzed it.However football is played on grass not paper. Its all to do with heart, steel and cohesion and sometimes a little bit of luck. The only thing Man United and Chelsea have over Liverpool at the moment is experience. They've been over the course before and know how to finish the job. They can handle the pressure.Have they got a better squad that Liverpool. They do,but only marginally. Its definitely not a chasm as some would make you believe.Liverpool have proved that they on any given day can wipe the floor with the top teams. However its the confidence and belief with beating the lesser sides like Spurs and Everton, they have the trouble with.Beating Man United to a pulp proved that they can wipe the floor with the better teams.
I don't understand this rubbish about Liverpool's 'fantastic second half of the season' The season before Everton won 11 out of their 19 games, losing only 2. That was a better record than Liverpool but was everybody terrified about Everton the next season? No. It didn't mean a thing. It shows what can happen when the pressure is off that's all.
Did Everton beat three shades of **** out of Man United when they went on that run.No they didn't.There is a difference between Liverpools finances and Evertons too.
But you are just irrelevantly likening it to another teams performance while ignoring the most significant difference which was a change in manager -what is the point in that? Yes it could turn out to be the same as what happened at Everton but here we have a reason for the change in fotunes which is Dalglish.
Everton didn't add to their squad though. When you don't sign new players the momentum and positivity you've built up over those 6 months evaporates instantly in the new season if you start the new season indifferently. It happened to us in 09/10 and it happened to Everton at the start of this season. By adding players you get competition for places which means the players get some sort of second wind and are encouraged to keep up their performances instead of stagnating and retreating into their comfort zone.
The change of ownership plus the appointment of Kenny who the players recognise as someone suitable to manage the club.I don't think they took to Hodgson even from the very start, they gave him a chance because he was the manager. However like us it was blind faith. The change in atmosphere when Kenny took over was astounding. It improved further with the departure of a certain sulky Spaniard and the arrival of a energetic and smiley Uruguayan. The response from Dirk Kuyt showed that things were far better,He was playing alongside someone that sang from the same hymn sheet as him.
Ah but it can only be the same as Evertons late season improvement the season before - because that is of course exactly the same- what a dimwit!
