I think it’s more of a coaching role nowadays rather than the traditional managers like Wenger and Fergie who had complete oversight over all aspects of the club, from the players, tactics, transfers, coaching, contracts, etc.

Clubs these days are vastly complex businesses with PR, marketing, sponsorship and corporate management. The footballing side is just one aspect of it.

I’m glad arsenal got a man in who is just responsible for what happens in the pitch, and have handed over other responsibilities to others in the club, because Wenger had too much control and wasn’t doing any of it very effectively towards the end.

Complex in using the club to line their pockets and turn over the fan base. Ooh it’s on the tip of my tongue. :)

Given how our team have performed since 2006/07 since Keane's first season then I think managers do matter. Reid was probably one of our best man managers but his signings give or take a few gems was iffy. I think the problem with managers now is that a few fair of them at the successful clubs make it a lot more about them with their ego and live on their reputation from an age ago. The Bob Paisley's of the world just got on with it behind the scenes and won a hell of a lot..

Absolutely Joe, Paisleyis Liverpool’s greatest ever managers. Same mould of SAF, it was never about them but the club.

I don't think people realise just how good SAF was, his youth policy was second to none. Bertie Mee at Arsenal was a good manager too as was Dave Sexton. Football was great them era's and we had football cards in the tea boxes and *** packets.. <ok>

Indeed, but Fergie was so lucky to have Beckham, Scholes, Giggs, Two Neville’s and dare I include a Butt in that company all come through all at one time. Unprecedented that.

Totally agree but you could give someone 5k and they would piss it up against the wall as an easy route, then again someone else with 5k would turn it into 30k and so on. Fergie got the very best out of that lot and especially in Beckham's case, a worldwide household name. Scholes was the best by far, superb player he was..

We dream of those player's at Sunderland <laugh>.. Mind you, we did have Kevin Phillips as you as a Chelsea fan will remember, he was up with the best as a goalscorer. Essien made the game look simple and a good man too I'm led to believe?

Yes he was Joe, Phillips was vastly underrated as a striker but his goals tell a different story.
