It was alleged it was Iran previously, don't know if any evidence was put forward supporting that accusation.

Difficult to know what to trust when it comes to info coming out of the Gulf states and middle East. There are all sorts of factions at play there, and all kinds of proxy wars both real and cold going on just beneath the surface. It would suit Israel and the west to pin it on Iran, especially after the last incident as it would rachet up pressure on them. But equally it could be another actor at play, designed to make it look like Iran, in order to rachet up pressure on them ......

Yup. I struggle to see what a powerhouse like Iran have to gain by anything like this. Maybe they are smaller fry than I give them for, and resort to tactics the somalian pirates are better at in their ramshackled way.

Yeah, it doesn't really make any sense for Iran to launch small scale attacks like this. They are interested in enriching uranium to produce nuclear weapons, in order to become a player like Israel in the middle east. Small scale maritime attacks doesn't seem to achieve very much for them unless I'm missing something ?

Like you say, it has the hallmarks of Somali-esque pirates. Simple transactional motives : We hijack your ship, you pay us a ransom to release the crew

It's the tip of the iceberg of a much broader power-play being carried out by Israel and Iran in tit for tat attacks on each other's cargo ships for the past 2 years. Iran's ships have been attacked using missiles and sea mines by Israel backed by the U.S. with accusations Iran is transporting oil to Syria and some shipments of weaponry as well, including to Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Rebels in Yemen fighting the Saudis. Iran has responded in kind against Israeli cargo ships headed for the gulf to places like Oman and further to India. Even Russia has become involved, mainly as an escort for Iranian ships in the region.

Up until now it's all been low-level **** with mainly precision targeting so as not to cause significant damage or injury to personnel, but anyone who thought it wasn't going to escalate is living in cloud cuckoo land... and obviously it now has. There'll be an Israeli response and then an Iranian one (as that's literally what's been happening over the past year in particular) and then I hate to say it but we'll have a "new normal" with personnel being considered acceptable collateral damage.

The trouble is, the wider world has no knowledge of the background and build up to what's happened now as very little makes the news until someone gets killed and then the situation is used in isolation to serve as a PR exercise to paint the "big bad wolf". The idea that Israel or the U.S. can claim any moral high ground in this is laughable. As I said, all parties are playing a dangerous game which was always inevitably going to escalate and it's very likely it will escalate further.

This gives a brief outline of the maritime attacks. I'm not sure how much I trust the reporting from a Washington based journal but it gives some idea of what's going on...

As for the hijacking, from what I understand nothing's been confirmed but as you say it's more akin to Somali-esque pirate **** than anything else. Having said that I find it funny that should Iranians have boarded a cargo ship it's classed as an "unauthorised boarding" and hijacking of a vessel, yet when we boarded an Iranian cargo vessel last year it wasn't considered the same lol.

Tbph I treat anything anyone says with a pinch of salt, it's easier to think they are all lying toads. I managed to get two idioms in that sentence, although I think lying toads might just be a phrase.

I'm not really into any group as such, but I appreicate some of the solo work. I expect I could find something of dire straits equally interesting, but I'm loving the intricacy of this floyd piece.

Will not be listening to that again, too vocally, too much everything really, just not something I'd be interested in playing. Best way for me to describe it is via this in the comments, which was meant to be praise... ' three chords and I know who is at the strings.' for me, there's your problem. There's a reason it's got 1.3k down votes. If I want to cry myself to sleep or bore myself witless, I'll remember this piece. Someone tried to claim it was up there with comfortably numb, all I can say is they must be tone deaf then.
