Some (or all) of you will have noticed difficulties posting of late - you hit "submit reply" and nothing appears to happen. Thanks to Reebs for offering the following work around:

"This broken forum - how to live with it.

If you have clicked to post, and the little blue circle is just going round and round, give it a couple of minutes then open IE in a new window and you will see your post sitting there looking just fine. Close down the old window. Rinse and repeat as necessary."

I don't know the exact cause of this, I use Firefox and it often asks me if I want to leave the page or not after posting when this problem occurs. It seems that somehow the post is correctly transmitted, but the web browser thinks it hasn't been and there's a delay in it getting logged on the server.

Either that or I'm talking complete bo0llocks (again). I'm sure our guiding light and oracle Ron may have a pukka explanation.

This has happened before and as Reebs says, open up the forum in a new window and check to see if it has appeared; if so just close the other window. It's a pain and I'll raise it again on the mods forum.

Like most forms of I.T., this forum is not bereft of issues. At least it is a lot cheaper (free to members) than big government I.T. projects and does appear to work most of the time.

On a number of occasions, I have submitted replies and nothing has happened. Opening the same thread in a new browser window has revealed that my entry has been added but it does not appear to have worked correctly in the original window. As stated, when one tries to close the original window, the browser then queries whether you wish to navigate away.

If you actually pay any attention to the “Posts” count on the left under your user name, you may notice some times that it does not increase. I actually have two posts numbered 905. When I made the first one on the 16th October, it reported a database error but the posting was unaffected. The following morning when I made another posting on the same thread this was also reported as number 905, suggesting to me that the database error had been a failure to update the post count against my user name. The second post that I made on 17th October was correctly numbered 906.

I am not sure how the “Rep Power” magic numbers are supposed to work but mine seems to have changed at arbitrary times this year and this does appear to be reflected in the “Points” total.

The framework that this forum is based upon is quite a commonly used one on various other sites so I do not expect that anybody involved with just the day-to-day running of Not606 is going to be able to address it.

You will love this – when I posted the reply above (timed at 08:37PM), I got the message dialog asking if I wanted to navigate away from the page! It is a fault in the JavaScript that deals with quick replies.
