The term "skates" was made popular as an abusive term towards Portsmouth fans after a Southampton fanzine asked readers to help search for the term most likely to cause offence to them!!

I don't think there were ever actually innocent times. Profanities just change with the times.

Am ex-military and know my history

Skate is traditional naval slang for a malingerer ie a work-shy individual and p**pey being a naval city....

That is 100% correct as I have said on many an occasion just as scummer is a naval term for a merchant seaman terms dating back at least to the first world war!!

Thing is, you can add any sort of profanity to the the word Skate to emphasise it's offence.

Eg. Skate Bastard, Skate W**ker, Skate Pr**k or Skate C**t

It's pretty effective!

Back on the old 606, I posted on a Pompey thread about who they should sign with their transfer kitty (sixpence and a button at the time) and I suggested that they might try to sign Rajidae on loan. He was only experienced in the "lower leagues" and some of his recent performances had been a bit flat, but he might be able to do a job for them. My first deleted post on 606! I was so proud! <laugh>

My first deleted post on the old 606 was about a broadcasting issue of MotoGP and how the BBC wouldn't even dream of doing the same to the F1 crowd. It lasted all of 45 minutes or so. I was mortified, but proud as well. <wah><yikes>:steam:<laugh>
