This can strike anyone at any time, right out of the blue so those sniping about some sort of 'con' should be ashamed of themselves. Quite often people who would seem to have everything in life just succumb to this awful condition, Gary Speed is a perfect example. The biggest obstacle is often 'coming out' and admitting the problem especially in the 'macho' environment of the dressing room. There was the Robert Enke suicide a couple of years ago who threw himself in front of a train, you'd think with their wealth that their lives would be fantastic but often there are all sorts of pressures that they just can't cope with, everyone is different...

Best post on the thread, along with Turkish's earlier.

Unfortunately the half-wits and WUMs will always show themselves up in a subject like this. Ignore.

I have both professional and personal experience on this matter and when I was diagnosed I was going through a period of time where I shouldhave been happy but as they say money is not the be all and end all in life. I changed my life and am now beginning my nursing degree and have been working in some difficult hospitals both state run and private with persons with mental health difficulties. I have seen children as young as ten try to ligature themselves due to depression and been there to comfort a lady in her 90's who wanted to commit suicide. As I mentioned on here earlier 1 in 4 people suffer from a mental illness such as depression at some stage in their life.

In varying hospitals I have worked with nurses and doctors from African countries and during conversations mental illness is not seen as a real illness and if someone self harms, attempts suicide then they are shunned and not given time, depression is not understood as its not a physical problem and again there is very little support from the medical professions. I wish Samba well and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) may assist him understand this illness and move forward in a positive manner.

It is difficult to fully comprehend what he is going through as I didnt know I was depressed I thought I had sleep problems which was causing my low mood etc so lets give the guy our support and not question his integrity as we do not know what has gone on behind the scenes.

Some people need to realise there's a massive difference between feeling down and being clinically depressed. Unless you have experienced the latter, you won't be able to distinguish it from the former. Get well soon, Samba, and hope you're back at Loftus Road thrilling us again soon.

We were all depressed about the opening day game but jeez.

Really, though, only those who don't understand depression will be on his case about this. Depression is a tricky issue.

Furthermore, you can be biologically or neurologically inclined towards depression.

I think the world knowing about his condition will help him - most people will be sympathetic towards him. Some won't be sympathetic, of course.

I have suffered from depression for a number of years. Probably more than 20. To those that don't suffer I would say 2 things: Lucky you and don't mock those that do.

My depression almost lost me my family and without the support of my wife, I would be in a very dark place right now, if I hadn't topped myself, that is. I have some idea of how mine started and have seen a psychologist and I have been on anti depressants for about 5 years. This is not a thing to deal with on your own, and I do feel for Samba and his family.

Happily, with help it can be controlled although in my case, I don't think it can ever be cured. You cannot control these things, so whilst the timing isn't great, Samba had no control over it.

    I wish him well.

I think having it out in the open might make him feel uncomfortable at first but will ultimately be a huge relief.

Also, I reckon being in France while the story breaks is a good thing.

Depression is a serious thing. One of my mates got it and sadly lost the fight. It can hit anyone and doesn't matter about money or a good family life, whatever. Very sad and hope it gets himself back on the road. <ok>

Depression can indeed hit anyone, and it has no reference to how much people earn, or how fit they are, or how happy or sad they 'appear'. Anything can trigger it, and there's no simple cure. I know people who have suffered from this (family members and friends) and sometimes it's just a short term thing, sometimes it can go on for years.

We as true R's fans shouldn't be looking for anyone to blame, because there isn't anyone to blame.

Samba, I hope you get well, and get well soon. The club and fans are here for you when you do.

I don't feel cheated at all. Can't believe some people have mentioned this and have even alluded to how much hes earning meaning he shouldn't be depressed. Absolutely ridiculous, never read so much tripe in my life.

All the best to Samba and hope he gets over it ASAP.

D'you know what Houston 2? Your summary of your condition at that time fits what I went through entirely. In fact it beats everything I've ever read on the subject (volumes at the time) for both accuracy and concision. Reading it was like being taken back (nearly 30 years) to the scene of an accident after everything including myself, had been tidied up and made good.

It's so hard to be that objective and concise on such an intensely private and personal condition - especially with that awful, endless void being so relatively recent in your own case. I can absolutely assure you that, whilst there will always be the ultimate casualties with that condition, there is also every chance of complete and enduring recovery. My system's taken many challenges since those days and there's always been that little wry smile at the end of a 'problem' at how well it's stood up.

Excellent piece of writing mate. So very well put.

Nice also to see the wave of understanding and sympathy coming through for Diakite. (Don't know if I'd have managed to free myself in the kind of public arena he's in though... )

Having personal experience of depression it'll take 6 weeks for any anti-depressants to kick in and depending on how bad it is at least another 3-6 months, so we're looking at 4 months at least before he returns. I hope it's not anything more serious than depression such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Can't believe some posters are blaming people instead of wishing Samba a speedy recovery.

I'll keep this brief as I don't want to get involved, to wound up by this thread already. Just to say the same sense talked by most, and the usual crap posted by a few, again and again and again and again.

Good Luck Samba, wishing you a speedy recovery. Nothing else matters!

Please don't phrase it like that! The future Mrs QPR Matt has acute depression and anxiety (for 25 years) and CFS (plus a thyroid condition and a few compulsive behaviours to boot). I won't say it's always easy but she's well worth it. <smooch>

I still put most of it down to her Ipswich Town season ticket though!!!! ;)
