Gents, saints fan in peace. A load of us were shocked/appalled when we sacked Adkins, but now it seems like that was the correct choice. This does seem knee jerk but the truth is you never know what's around the corner!

At least you boys will all keep backing the team behind whoever comes in... Unlike Chelsea and Rafa Benitez! Sunderland'll never be as much of a laughing stock as Chelsea are after that (in my eyes!)

Excellent point and the Saints are far better under Pochettino than Adkins.

"He’s a young manager trying to stamp his mark on things, but he’s making some big mistakes. " - Bramble.

Would seem he was correct despite the abuse he was given for his comments.

I know it seems knee jerk, but your five games away from being practically relegated if you carried on with this form.As if you waited until 10 games played and you still haven't won, it would be similar to QPR last year who waited too long to sack Hughes and they where relegated in November.

At least now you have chance to bring in an experienced manager like Pullis, who wont be exciting but will have you organised and picking up points.

    I'd prefer Ole Gunnar Solksjaer

You are much more likely to stay up now. The way things were going you and Palace were going to take up 19th and 20th.

From the outside it looks bad, especially after 5 games but something has gone on for Short to act this quick and it hasnt been the results in the first 5 games.

Anyone can see that together with shocking bad luck and a tough fixture list, most people who were in the frame last season to replace MON would be in a similar position but you dont sack someone after 5 games.

He has either lost the dressing room as reports suggest and once that happens there isnt really much other choice for Short to do, I trust Short all the way in this decision.

I'd be horrified to see that man anywhere near the club.

Apart from being a despicable man he's out of management for good reasons.

If we go for another 'old guard' manager I'll be very disappointed.

The club is still at Roker Park in it's mentality ............ we need to be pulled into the future not dragged back into the past.

Seems to me this morning (didn't even bother coming on here last night) that Ellis Short is going the deadly doug route at Villa sack happy. I can see the results weren't great Christ I was at some of those games but, I could also see some decent football being played.
To sack him after 5 games is either a master stroke or the biggest **** up since the Captain of the Titanic said "it's only a bit of ice". Thing is the next 5 games are not going to gain us many points either 1 at best so do we sack the next man after that run and get someone else in?
I hear some of the names being bandied about and think how deluded some of us are, Mancini come of it we have no cash to spend (too busy paying off ex managers) so not a hope in hell. Poyet a half decent shout but still no PL experience same as PDC albeit at the next level up. Di Matteo did well at WBA but, inherited a good team at Chelsea (the players did like him mind).
One of the lads put up a list of possibles on Saturday I think and I hadn't heard of 90% of them so either no or very little PL experience.
Ally McCoist doing well in the Scottish second division with a decent SPL (or whatever they call it now) team, not the answer.
Tony Pulis sorry but, he comes and there will be a significant drop in crowds.
Don't know how this came about hearing of player revolts etc. I'm sorry but are these the same players who instead of taking it up with the manager are just playing **** to prove a point?
We all knew this first bunch of 10/11 games were terrible and, I can't see anyone other than a miracle worker being able to do any better with the next few games, get that revolving door fitted to the managers office and get a big tin of WD40 ready.
We are lurching from manager to manager without any sort of continuity which is why we will never amount to much, we all laughed at the barcodes when Pardew got an 8 year contract, 8 years for us means probably 10 managers.
Quick question will we have spent more on paying off PDC than we spent all in all on transfers this season?

Paolo Di Canio has become the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season following a furious row with senior players during an inquest into Sunderland’s 3-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion.

Sunderland's weekend defeat leaves them two points adrift at the foot of the table and they are the only side in the division yet to win a league game. It is thought that former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo will be asked to replace him.

Di Canio won just of his 12 Premier League games since replacing Martin O’Neill in March.

Owner Ellis Short took a gamble on appointing a manager whose only previous experience came in the lower leagues with Swindon Town. His confrontational manner has caused friction throughout his reign and he felt the fury of the dressing room as a result.

The Italian has criticised his *players in public and upset them with his pedantic rules at the training ground. The final straw came when he laid into them on Sunday but was stunned when senior players – thought to have been led by the man he stripped of the captaincy – Lee Cattermole, turned the blame back on him.

Short has been alarmed by reports from staff about Di Canio’s behaviour in recent weeks and with results so poor he has acted to prevent an error in judgment becoming catastrophic.

Di Canio’s erratic personality was never likely to impress highly paid Premier League stars. Former defender Titus Bramble warned in The Daily Telegraph in June that Di Canio was making “big mistakes” and was more interested in his “image than anything else”. Significantly, though, he also rapidly lost the faith and goodwill of supporters as the team have looked in disarray.

His final memorable act as *manager was to walk over to Sunderland’s fans on Saturday, where he was met with a torrent of anger while he gestured at them to keep their chins up.

Di  Canio’s failure to gel 14 new signings into a team after asking for a radical overhaul of the squad was also a huge disappointment to Short.

However, the focus will also fall on the club’s Italian director of football Roberto Di Fanti who signed the *players. Di Canio was responsible for identifying the type of player he wanted, but not picked the indivi*duals to fill the roles he wanted to improve. He has recently bemoaned the failure to sign the English midfielder he wanted, after Sunderland lost out to Hull City when trying to land Tom Huddlestone from Tottenham Hotspur.

Di Canio only signed a 2½-year contract when he replaced O’Neill and said that he was happy with the title of head coach rather than *manager as this more accurately reflected his responsibilities.

If Di Matteo is the man to replace him, he will have many of the same problems to address. Of the 14 *players signed, only two Jozy Altidore and Sung-Yong Ki, have any previous experience of playing in the Premier League and neither can claim to have been a resounding success.

Speaking on Saturday night after the defeat at the Hawthorns, Di Canio made it clear that he would not quit. “What? Never,” he said.

“I always believe that I am the best manager in the world. Why should I have to walk out? I have been *working 24 hours a day. The 24 players have to adapt to me. The *players have to adapt to one person. The manager has to try to find the key to achieve the best from every person. I am a warrior. I will fight to turn it around because I am a top man, a top manager. I will go to a place and do the best I can to get the respect of the people that gave me the chance.”

The facts, though, made unpalatable reading for the Sunderland board. They backed the Italian in the summer transfer window and did not witness any tangible signs of progress, while Di Canio’s frequently out*landish antics were an unwelcome sideshow.

To make Sunderland’s problems worse, they will next face Liverpool, Manchester United, Swansea City and Newcastle United after their Capital One Cup match against *Peter*borough.

I don't think that this is a decision based on results or performances! Maybe Di Canio's erratic interviews and the rumours of poor man management were just the tip of the ice berg! I don't think the players would have liked his methods and were unwilling or unable to give 100%! Unfortunately you cant sack all of the players! Gutted it hasn't worked! Not surprised it didnt! It was always a risk! Just a little surprised that the rot set in so quickly! Although you could argue that it set in at the Villa game last season, we didn't recover from that! I have a little suspicion as well that the fixture list may have had a say in things on sacking him! We were desperate to pick up a few points before the deadly run of games! We havnt! We've been poor against some mediocre sides! Beaten comfortably! Its a weird one for me! I'm neither happy nor upset! Just gutted this new direction didn't work out! Hey ho!

What a beautiful sunny day, let's come on 606 and pi55 myself off.

This is going to haunt us, I have spent all off season begging for the football to be back and five games in fed up to the back teeth. Don't suppose we know the truth, awfully Chelsea sounding, over paid players revolting, but just to say on the face of it, five games in is knee jerk, still had my faith, it could well be several games till we get another point or three.

Familiar quote, whys it always me/us

Does this guarantee our safety? No, but does us give us a better chance? Absolutely!!!

People day 5 games is too early, just look at the next 5. Has Di Canio shown.anything to suggest he could get anything from those games? No.

We would have been rock bottom and cast adrift after 10 games and any managers that may be up for the challenge now might think twice about a team rock bottom on one or two points after 10 games.

The club have made the right call.
