Funnily enough SB my practice is a chartered surveying & project management company It all comes down to the preparation and detail at the design stage thus minimising changes during construction which lead to delays and increased costs. Good design, planning, prep and a tender list of experienced contractors always helps. A long way to go yet. Anything involving a planning department and the highways department will never be straightforward. A good start so far though
Excellent we now have a source of authority on this stuff, and I understand the Hong Kong link now as well. You must have had a lot of fun building stuff on minute plots on sheer hillsides. Many, many years ago I was the bloke from the HK government who says ' fine you can build it, but we want a day care centre for the elderly, a youth centre and a day nursery on the first two levels. Or a load of cash so we can build these somewhere else'.
How many years ago was that SB? I was out there 20 years ago. Lived in Discovery Bay, my office was in Wanchai - a great place to work
Way before that I'm afraid, I was there 83 to 86, lived in Shatin for a bit when it was still a building site with a race track, but most of the time Mid Levels. Quite a few evenings in Wanchai though......in my early 20s at the time, it was like going to heaven. Haven't been back for 20 years, must do something about that soon. Played footy for ASA Dynamo ( actually a founding member) if you ever came across them. Yau Yi League, if I remember correctly.
I played for Boca Seniors and then latterly Peng Chau Fishermen I've not been back since '99 The HK Stadium is an excellent design & venue and the sort of structure we should be aiming for
Blimey, what a small world. I too worked in HK between late 93 amd late 96 and lived in DB too. I worked on the Tsing Ma Bridge. Funnily enough I went back for a holiday earlier this year for the first time since. A gap og 16 years!
And HK seems to be one of the few places we don't have an Overseas Hoop representative in. We'll set up the 'old China Hands' sub board soon.... That bridge is a nifty piece of engineering. Nice one. I'm guessing you weren't a welder.....
No, I was Project Accountant on it. About as interesting as number crunching gets that job was. Fantastic place and fantastic project. Funnily enough we started off in Shatin (The Regal Riverside Hotel) and some of the guys lived there for the whole duration as it was no more expensive than the ridiculously high rents. It was great going back. I recommend it.
I can see the demand for tickets at the last game at LR will fill our new stadium several times over. I personally would pay anything, even kiss Swords! But one things for sure!!!!! I shall be taking anything that I can use to dig up as much of the turf when the final whistle goes, just like when we got rid of our old pitch for the astro turf. We planted the center circle on my dads roof, had about 4 Sq feet of it, it survived in a rather tatty state for nearly a year. One things for sure, I'm sure I shall be crying like a baby when I walk out of the ground for the last time. So many memories, beautiful memories, some pretty horrible memories (3-0 down to Leeds in a cup game after 12 minutes, surrounded by the biggest, ugliest bunch of Leeds thugs you've ever seen). But the memories will always be there, but I look forward to a million more.
We can't all take seven years to bridge the gap. Come to think of it, isn't that how long we've been out of the top flight?
It is indeed. 7 long years. So you should know better than giving it the big 'un before you've been tested at this level. I fear you may come crashing back down to earth with a big bump.
We sent Norwich ahead to test the water. It's fine apparently. They didn't even need Bolton to seppuku.
