not really knowledgeable enough about the subject to debate it. But seemingly it was used in rallies against Jews in Paris very recently.

It came to prominence in the elections of 2009, as the gesture of the "liste antisioniste." It may have started out as a gesture of defiance but lately it's turned into a game: Find the most Jewish place you can and make the quenelle. A pair of French soldiers making the gesture outside a bank in Paris is one example. The memorial to the Shoah in Berlin also works. Or Aushwitz. At the Western Wall, with Israeli soldiers -- that's another popular spot.

PARIS — A march through Paris against French President Francois Hollande ended with anti-Semitic chants and cries of support for an anti-Semitic comedian.

At least 150 protesters were arrested in the “Day of Anger” demonstrations on Sunday, according to reports. Nineteen police officers were injured in clashes with protesters, one seriously, the French news agency AFP reported. Police estimated that 17,000 participated in the march.

Protesters performed the quenelle, a gesture reminiscent of the Hitler salute that was invented by the anti-Semitic French comedian Dieudonne M’bala M’bala. They also called for freedom of speech on Dieudonne’s behalf.

Anti-Semitic chants included “Jews go home” and “Jews, France is not your country,” according to Israel Radio.

It is also called a Quennelle because it's inventor famously said he would like to shove a quenelle (which I gather is a large oval foodstuff of some sort) up the asses of everyone who keeps going on about the holocaust.

It's a widely recognised anti semetic gesture. Call Anelka stupid if you like, but it was pretty stupid.

So... a game with ASTON VILLA fits in with this theme does it? <doh>

As every report suggests, it was not invented as an anti-jewish statement. As Anelka made it clear he was simply showing support for his friend, the inventor of the gesture, why should any other connotations be put on this because of how other people use it?! He's just said what it meant. Why do you feel qualified to put words in his mouth? Why does the FA? It would be like me objecting to African players dancing after they score a goal because I think it makes light of those with a lack of rhythm in clubs all over the world, and their inability to meet a nice lady because of all the Patrick Swayze-types <laugh>

Freddd's "it's widely recognised as an anti-semitic gesture" is just a care-free comment devoid of any actual meaning. The media recognise it as anti-semitic but not every commentator has. It's actually mainly the conservative toff papers that went overboard in their appraisal of the situtation... "bloody foreigners coming here, making foreign gestures!!!!"... as news outlets struggled to understand what to make of it, all they knew for certain was that they could make it newsworthy somehow, so they found any Jew they could to come in and say how bad it was... pathetic <laugh>

If my friend invented an unmeltable chocolate bar, and it turned out a group of dim-witted thugs wedded unmeltable chocolate bars and my friend's personal and controversial (but hardly original) dislike of the parentless, to form the consequence of walking around and hitting orphans in the face with said chocolate... does that mean it'd be publicly indefensible for me to enjoy an unmeltable chocolate bar in public? I'm going to put it to you quite simply... If you think that you can be so morally idiotic as to find offense from this, then you need to give away at least half the stuff you own, because a lot of inventions came from odd-balls with weird views, or from countries rife with persecution... Think of how much technology progressed from WW2 and NAZI efforts (yeah, Neil Armstrong would have still been on earth in 1969 if it hadn't been for Nazi technology... and medical innovation would have been way behind where we are today, as would air travel etc)... Think of those Disney films you let your kids watch, then look up good old Walt's world views... Now realise what a massive hypocrite you are. Either you offend me by having such products, by going anywhere in a plane etc, a clear sign you're in league with these world views, or you can't criticse Anelka.

Putting this logically, if A is jewish hating, and B is this gesture... Why does it mean that just because A and B share a flat, that they are mutually inclusive? B could be f**king C, or D quite happily, while A goes on hating jews.

I can't have much sympathy with the banned invader. Aye it was a highly charged match but I still think it takes a knacker to do what he did.

As for Anelka, just seems ridiculous to me. This comedian may be an absolute prat for all I know. However if he says no offence is meant to Jewish people, then no ofence is meant to Jewish people. Surely if he wanted to offend Jewish people, he would just have said he intended to offend Jewish people? To then have the hysterical overreaction of banning Anelka, for doing a symbol made famous by the guy as a show of support to his friend, seems utterly ludicrous to me.

We spend way too much time in this country (world) trying to find things to be offended about. It is embarrassing.
