Why did Cowie want Newcastle's fans JH?

‘HE’S made a rod for his own back,” said Mick Smith, secretary of the Jarrow branch of the Sunderland Supporters’ Association, reacting to the latest outburst from then club chairman Tom Cowie.

In an interview with the Gazette’s Dick Kirkup, motor firm magnate Cowie delivered a shocking put-down of his team’s fans, saying: “I believe Newcastle supporters are more loyal than Sunderland’s.”

He compounded the insult by adding: “Right now, we have a better-than-average product….<ok>

    Good evening.
    Nice to be back.

    A small addition JH.
Cant understand why they didn't like Cowie, a car salesmen at heart who was running the club like the Used Car Lot its always been.
He had the b**** to tell there supporters they were crap and OURS were better. We always knew that anyway but, at the time it was still pleasing to see the Chairman of SAFC acknowledge that FACT publicly and in the Sunderland Echo at that.

Not much changed in the last 30 years, OUR support still better and bigger.
Perhaps Short should take note from Cowie and realise that in time he's backed a loser with support who will f*** off at the drop of a hat.

    Full quote below:

"Support us, or I'll sell Roker Park."

This was the bombshell dropped on Sunderland fans by club chairman Tom Cowie in March 1983, as the club struggled to cope with a 500,000 overdraft.

"They either want First Division football, or they don't. If they do, they should get their hands in their pockets and come and support us," said Mr Cowie.

"I would suggest to the hard core supporters of 15,000: 'bring a friend.' If they all bring someone, that would be the end of our problems."

Sunderland was once known as the "Bank of England Club", due to the vast amounts of money spent on players and improving the team.

However, by 1983, SAFC was in such a "poor financial situation" that its training facilities at Washington and Cleadon were in danger of being sold off.

Indeed, so bleak was the situation that motor magnate Mr Cowie admitted: "I wish we had Newcastle's supporters. I never thought I would say this, but it is true.
    :D
"We are 10,000 short on gates. The only way we can continue running as we are – as a major force in soccer – is if the people of Sunderland really support us."

Second Division Newcastle were enjoying bumper gates at the time, averaging 25,000 fans per game, compared with just 17,000 at First Division Roker Park.

"Would Sunderland supporters have rallied had Kevin Keegan come here? We have Gary Rowell, who has scored more goals in the First Division than Keegan has in the Second," said Mr Cowie.

Despite the club's predicament, however, he ruled out a potentially lucrative shares issue, and instead urged fans to "Send a pound to save the ground."

"I don't think it is unreasonable for supporters to donate 1," the 60-year-old said.

"I'd rather see that, than some whiz-kid with a million quid buy the club.

"I want the town to respond to this plea. I would like to see 500 volunteers come forward to sell lottery and bingo tickets to help get rid of our overdraft of 500,000.

"I would like to see people organising marathon runs and I would like to see business people helping the club. It is in the town's interest we have First Division football.

"Most of all, I want to see 10,000 fans back at Roker Park, putting their hands into their pockets to support us."

Wearsiders, however, reacted with "anger and indignation" to Mr Cowie's threat to sell the club unless supporters helped out financially, according to the Echo.

"Most people the Echo spoke to were angry he has asked them to dip into their pockets, while he refuses to dip into his own to buy top-class players," it was reported.

The previous 10 years to Cowie making those comments, Sunderland had consistantly higher average crowds than Newcastle despite spending most of that time in the division below, which the nutty liar known as Humble Pie will surely fail to acknowledge..

Six times since the war you've had a higher average than us mate. And two of those were when you moved into SOL and our ground wasn't redeveloped.

Check the total average crowds for the previous ten years to that of Cowie's comments and see who comes out on top, and then check the league tables to see who spent most of that time in the higher league..My comments are based on facts...Considering your rather disturbing obsession with all things Sunderland, I thought you would have known all this already..

Why any mackem would look to average attendances is beyond me. I'm sure I read somewhere since entering the football leagues the record of who averaged more than the other stands at something like 88-21. We're just a better supported club. Always have been in the main.

I just checked your figures for season 1973-4 and you had Sunderland's about 10,000 below the actual figure, so I didn't even bother checking the rest..
