A lot if managers do not believe in, and do not use out and out defensive midfield players. They are not exactly easy to find, but the box to box midfielder is what's needed. One that can pass too. I'm not sure on Dembele's fitness or work rate stats, but he can pass, tackle effectively, and reads the game very well. Sandro may be capable of the job also.

exactly, this is why I believe him and Dembele will work very well together. I think Dembele will prove to be as versatile as Dempsey is known to be. He seems to be a footballer with real intelligence.

Roo you put lennon in infront of Dempsey?..i wouldnt..i think after Livermore..Lennon is the next weakest link..throw him on with 15 to go if we need him since he only seems to have one move in his locker nowadays.

if i had have put dempsey in, you would have said "taking lennon out the team?! can't just drop people Roo, it'll disrupt the team". - i wasn't going to win with that one!

I see they have all jumped thread and gone off to discuss their tactics elsewhere. <laugh>

Spurf, how do we talk about Dembele without talking about tactics? or tactics that involve him?

Have I been boring you? :D I saw his goal again today and it shows what he adds. None of our other players would have done that in his position, it'd have either been hit first time straight into the crowd of defenders or passed sideways or backwards as we patiently expect their defence to let us in. Dembele's skill and intelligence to pull off the neat little turns and flicks that can help us open teams up in the final third when the defence is organised and compact. In addition to that you're also getting a player who can bring the ball from defence to attack much like much like Luka did for us.

Thanks YV. <ok>

Dembele is a good player. I'm surprised a CL team didn't snap him up with a £15M release clause in his contract.

But he isn't a Modric replacement. He can't dictate play with his short and long passing like Modric did. He's a more direct and energetic attacking midfielder who will carry the ball forward.

It's funny how you can dictate play if you get the ball and move it forward. It's quite an effective 'tactic'

I am obviously out of touch and lacking in tactical awareness because I don't play fantasy football games.

Do these digital players get tired or kicked? Do they have form?

Modric was key to Spurs retaining the ball effectively and he looked to make himself available (often in quite deep positions) to receive the ball as playmakers do. That isn't Dembele's game. He is stronger and more athletic. He will run forward with the ball, tackle and head, but his passing range and quality is inferior to Modric.

Luke, Luke of course he is not Modric he is Dembele. Modric has gone he is no more, now we have Dembele a player who ran rings round Uniteds midfield.

We move on.

Not sure about that actually, Lidls.
I think that they might have more similarities to their game than most people would expect.
He makes more runs than our former Croatian, but I'm not sure that the midget got enough credit for carrying the ball out at his feet, to be honest.
Dembele's passing is probably similarly underrated.

Lots of passes, virtually all successful and mainly forward.

He'd be different in that role, but I'm not sure just how different.
I guess we'll see.

There's only a handful of players who can pass like Modric but much like the other 99% of teams who don't have one we'll just have to work out a way of playing football without.

All the DMs really have to do is win the ball, and pass it to the back four (although Sandro, Livermore and Parker are actually quite good passers of the ball, that should not be their main role). We then pass the ball round until one of Dembele, Dempsey and Bale sees someone free in a dangerous position and slice through the defence. I kept saying that Modric would work better in the middle of the attacking three in 4231 but no-one agreed. Where did Mourinho play him yesterday? We lose matches against the best clubs because we don't learn from the best. Even the best take some time to adjust - United played 4231 yesterday and it didn't work very well, they only recovered by a swift change to 442, but I doubt SAF will give up on it after one failure - he saw how City beat them with it last year.

I think thats more a wish than an observation! this is where it all falls flat on its arse. During this 'passing it around 'phase is when the oppo's defence all get back in position (if they were ever out of it!) and all too often there's no room to 'slice' anything. Our build up play has been as slow as Dawson these few games!

Modric - I missed the game PS, but I am half intereseted how JM uses him. Put him up there first match did he? He might re-think that when he see's some of his shots! <laugh> In all seriousness when you've got Ronaldo in your side, you don't have to worry too much about other Mfers chipping in with goals.

Chelsea won the CL and FA Cup without a Modric in their side, there are plenty of ways to win games and major trophies.

The sign of great player is one who can impose himself on a game and turn it around. Modric always worked hard and made things tick but never in my memory did he change the face of a game.

Standby!

Depends how you want to look at it. Modric was vital to us because of his ability to keep the game ticking over and opening teams up with his longer range of passes. Dembele can replace some of his accurate passing and whilst he doesn't have Luka's range he can open teams up with his ability on the ball. There's more than one way to cook an egg.

Thank you spurf! This is why I've been banging on about how i think sandro and Dembele will work together well. With Dembele having a free role to get forwards and support, but also helping to defend and finding a pass out of our final 3rd. (I know you're fed up with tactics right now, so sorry!).

Don't apologise Roo it was more team formations I was sick of.

I wish this American spellchecker would stop pushing the 'z' We use an 'S' ok! now STFU

that's what i meant mate! i was referring to "you" as "you lot" but failed. I was going to get it wrong regardless of what formation i put down or what players I put in!
