As I say, if he remains fit and is played regularly, he scores. When he has these breaks, either through injury, or being put on the bench, he then tries too hard to prove himself - almost desperate to show what he can do - albeit to the detriment of the team at times. Having said that, I always prefer somebody who's willing to put on an effort, rather than a poser, like Bent.
You can see him in this video too, though it's also not too great a shot. Parker's looking very ginger.
Oh well !!! 'thats it then'... I can see Spurs finishing 5th, a point behind the Arse and deep in the smellier stuff...... again. We all knew, from the beginning of the season, that two strikers (past their best) were not enough to move us on. Its really no surprise to me now. It's inevitable,..... **** keeps happening to Spurs.
While I hope Defoe recovers soon, and that he's able to come in and help the team, I guess I'm on my own little island liking the team with Ade and Gylfi in it. I tend to hearken back to that first goal against Arsenal...
The thing that I just can't get my head around, is the fact that the club's expectation is 4th, but we do very little to help ourselves secure that position. We've needed a striker for years, but over the last 6 months or so, we've been so desperate, it been beyond a joke. - but nope, no one has come in to take care of that problem. Are the club serious about wanting CL football? How can you expect CL football when your strikers don't score goals? It's a pretty significant issue, that. You'd think that such shrewd businessmen might have noticed that they actually need to invest a bit in order to get their reward. - their shoe string "no net spend" approach has failed to secure CL football nearly every time. If we'd have had a top striker this season, we could be sat second in the league right now, taking advantage of city's awful season. But no, once again we did nothing to push ourselves on.
In the bbc gossip column today they say the club are going to overhaul the striker situation, and the number 1 target is benteke
I do wonder if our comments get read on here by journo's. Only yesterday I wrote that we could end up seeing 3 new faces and used benteke as an example. I honestly believe this summer could be the worst yet for us, in terms of speculation. Will bale go? won't he? if he does, who's the replacement? are we signing more creativity? are we getting another young DM? competition for wingers? new LB? up to 3 new strikers? Buckle up lads, it could be a big overhaul this summer.
I hope Roo is right, at least regarding the striker situation. However, past experience tells me not to hold my breath!..
Although the striker situation has been totally unacceptable, I do understand the reservations that Levy & co might have had about spending fortunes in AVB's first season. But he's more than proven his worth with a squad that contains gaps, holes and lack of depth. Even if he doesn't get us CL qualification, it'll still have been a very good first season, bearing in mind the loss of VDV and Modric who were an integral part of our team. He needs to be backed with the players he needs this summer and left to do the job he was brought in for. The club can't pull the wool over the eyes of the fans any longer. They are running out of reasons and excuses. This summer is the time to make a statement of intent.
If you don't get top 4 all the blame lies firmly with Levy. I'm not sure how anyone could expect a team to get top 4 with only 2 strikers (only one of which is reliable but generally fades as the season goes on) having sold their best 2 MF's. Top 4 is bigger this season because of the TV deal, CL qualification on top of that would give clubs a healthy amount to spend and to be frank, all PL clubs need strengthening because the league has been so poor this season.
I don't think he had much choice with Modric as he probably had an agreement with him,and Rafa wanted to go as his wife was working in Germany, and he was stuck here
I agree entirely. It has been blindingly obvious for some time now that we are far too lightweight in the striking dept. if Bale hadn't revealed himself to have even more talent than we already knew about, we would be well up that well known creek with the paddle heading towards the bottom. God knows where we would be without the goals he's scored! I agree with Tots about Modric. I suspect VDV would have stayed had we wanted him to, but AVB seemed convinced that he was getting Moutinho, so....off to Hamburg he went.
Are we that bothered that Defoe is unavailable? We ought to be but the truth is he has made little difference in recent games. As we have all said over and over again the striker issue needs addressing properly. It doesn't have to be mega millions of pounds, Newcastle have replaced their strikers successfully 3 times while we limp on. If they can find them and we can't there has to be something seriously wrong with our scouting methods.
Totally agree, DL. like you say, how can top 4 be a realistic aim when that's what we do with our transfer activity? You've got no chance when those you're competing against pay mega millions. Obviously we can't do that, but jesus, you've gotta make some sort of effort to compete to even stand a chance. Regardless tots, we got £40 million+ for those two. It was known that Modric wanted out, and I fail to believe that VDV's departure was an overnight decision bearing in mind his wife was away from him. A striker should have been bought in addition to the players we did purchase. With the £20 odd mill we brought in from the sale of dead wood, there was an opportunity to have a very decent summer despite the sales of 2 of our best players. Even if we'd bought that striker, with all the sales we made, we'd have still only spend about a net of £15m, even when you consider those we purchased. It's just not good enough for a club chasing top 4. Like spurf says, Newcastle manage to do a decent job of it.
