Doubt it would happen but would love to see him back. Regardless of division he'd be a class act. Seemingly not getting much of a look in at rangers, you'd think he'd want to be playing before he retires. If we went up and could give him a couple years as a bit of a project for him at a club he cares about it could be good for all.

I think that's the key issue. He loves his football, and won't want to sit out his last season on a bench. Our chance will only come if we go up, as I can't see him relishing trips to the likes of Accrington and Wimbledon.

He has had a good spell at Rangers and got them a hatful of goals. Towards the end of last season he was more that often being used as a sub and still sticking them in the net. He's not being getting game time recently and I'd imagine Rangers might want him off their wage bill.

If he is on the move, why wouldn't he want to play for a club he really loved and was genuinely adored by the fans?

He be a hell of a boost too, even at 38 we all know he'd get us goals - fuxake he's gold - get him back!

I'd love SKP on the coaching staff but if I'm being honest I'd rather have Defoe. I wonder if that's what he's planning or if he's going to quit and design bomber jackets and whatnot. I fancy he'll want to still be in football.
stop it your getting me stirring , can you imagine Sunderland with a proven striker for the last 20 mins when we cant buy a goal or the coaching he could give the academy, its like a fairy tail ill keep wishing, like being a kid a xmas you want a motor scooter to be cool but you know it will be a cap gun and cowboy outfit. Its about time we got the scooter before we grow up and move on

He'd be a great coach mate if that's what he wanted, with the setup we have under KLD we'd certainly be in the mix if he was looking for a job.

I’d love to see see him back at the club in a coaching capacity. I think he’d be a huge asset. I’m always dubious about players returning to play for their old club, though, as it rarely goes as well as their first spell.

This is all well and good lads but doesn't KLD have a plan and LJ etc will have nominated future coaches so JD might not be on their radar.
I know if he suddenly become a available why not give him a go but who knows what the masterplan is and what personnel it will involve in the next 12 months or so.
Would I take him...in a heart beat.

Not sure going back ever works out. He'll be 39 before this year is out, does that really fit into the new model where we are recruiting youngish player based on stats etc? The time for him to play for us in the Championship was 2017/18.

as a coach capable of doing a 20 min cameo role its perfect mate, imagine the wealth of info he can impart on the attack, he will spot problems well before anyone else so be able to act to rectify quicker i can only see positives
