Defoe better than Greaves - I don't think so Tim!

    Sherwood has also said:

"Jimmy Greaves was the best, but you would say Jermain has also been one of the best goalscorers this club has ever seen".

So it depends what you read doesn't it. But it enabled a good opportunity to have another dig at Sherwood, which is obviously very important in this relegation season we are having. Oh hang on a minute, are we not going to get relegated? Lucky that really because if we were really that bad some of you would probably explode judging by the comments we see when we are 5th.

Don't understand what your getting at here,it's nothing to do with our season it's the silliness of the comparision, between JD and Greavsie, would have been the same reaction whoever made it

Defoe is is our 5th all time top goal scorer and our all time leading European top goal scorer so no one can argue he wasn't one of the clubs all time best goal scorers, unless you view 5th as being too far down the list! and as mentioned by SOS, if Defoe played in a different era, he would have been higher up the list.

This isn't to try and talk down other players, as clearly Greaves was on a different level and Sherwood isn't suggesting they should be compared like for like, all he is doing is mentioning our best all time goal scorer (Greaves) and handing a nice compliment to a player who is leaving but liked by everyone at the club.

You may be happy to settle for 5th spot every season but for some of us it's all about champions league football and winning trophies.

I`ll have some of what Tim`s been smoking!

Defoe has been a good goalscorer for Spurs and his record speaks for itself, and I am disappointed he is leaving as he was always a favourite player, but Greavsie was on another level, and probably the greatest British goalscorer of all time, at a time of heavy pitches, hangovers and little protection from defenders.

    Excellent selection here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=docY5CRWqGc

Defoe was good but never really consistently did well enough.

A nearly ran. His career has petered out good and proper.

Shame because at times he was excellent and I would have had him at our place.

I think that Defoe's suffered as the game's changed to adopt various systems that don't use an old-fashioned pair of strikers.
His partnership with Crouch was very hard to deal with, but not many teams use such a pairing any more.
Those that do tend to use at least one striker who drops and/or goes wide a lot (Suarez, Rooney).

Agree with this, Defoe isn't the sort of player that can play up top on his own and unfortunately for him has never really played alongside a top quality number 10 which I feel would of brought out the best in him.

Jimmy Greaves was the best goalscorer I ever saw.He made it seem so easy I felt sorry fro the opposing defence.
Bobby Smith no.2. Had so much skill for a big man.Remember his goal against Spain? A wonderful chip over the Spanish keeper's head.
Martin Chivers (when he finally got his finger out!) absolutely unstoppable!I rate him just under Smithy.

Defoe allowed the defenders to knock him about, had he been taller and a little heavier,well.....A certain German was much, much better! Not to mention that tv pundit......
