Not that I’d know for sure, but Morrisons has a good reputation for their butchers. Fields was good for sausages, but overpriced for other stuff. Still get Xmas Turkey from there though as it’s just become a tradition (and you can order it and it’s close)
Dixon’s on Chants, as mentioned, is excellent. Great variety for bbq meats and sausage rolls are lovely. Fields in Anlaby is a bit expensive but their pork pies are the best.
No snobbery from these quarters, BUT,I go to Marks and Spencer for most of my meat products(Steak,Sausages,Black Pudding etc). It's marginally more expensive than other supermarkets but the quality is far superior. Mince,chicken...I 'slum' it and go to Tesco
What makes a good butchers Its all well and good saying here and there are a great butchers But what is it that seperates a run of the mill butchers to a top of the line butchers
Don't really know much about good and bad butchers, but the Hal & Al butchers around Spring Bank and Bev Road seem popular... Folks definition or geography of Hull is interesting as well
For me a good butcher is one who knows and cares about where the meat comes from and is happy to tell you and will cut any shape/size of meat you ask for. An even better butcher is all that plus being able to offer different product than the standard stuff. eg game/poultry, beef shin, osso buco, venison. Hard to find them now. edit: they also have to smell of blood and sawdust, and sell pork scratchings...
I had to Google 'osso buco', I was half expecting to find out it was horsemeat. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
Agree with that - living in Nth Lincolnshire I'm fortunate to live not too far from Tomlinsons' of Winteringham & Uncle Henry's at Grayingham, they're exactly as you describe in your first sentence; you're paying a bit more but the extra cash vs quality, I think, is worth it.
