My opposition is based on 1) innocent people will be executed through either mistakes or corruption. 2) What is considered to be murder changes over time ... for example Ruth Ellis was executed but today would have been charged with manslaughter due to the physical abuse she recieved from the bloke she killed. 3) What is considered murder is inconsistent. For instance, being drugged up or pissed and stabbing someone would mean a murder charge but killing someone when driving pissed or drugged up would lead to a manslaughter charge. 4) I do not agree with revenge killings. If some hurts one of mine I want blood but that ain't a basis for a justice system imo. 5) America and South Africa show to death penalty is not a deterrent. 6) I like disagreeing with comm, tel and ginger
You make a good point about it not being a deterrent. Facing a death penalty could in fact make people more desperate and commit more crime to avoid prosecution.
In theory I like the idea of the death penalty. However in practice is another matter. Imagine the loopholes and other delaying tactics, protests etc that we would have to rummage our way through before we could do away with someone. I think it should be carried out in extreme circumstances, serial killers, child killers, terrorism etc, but only when all boxes are ticked where evidence is concerned.
I’d like to call it a debate you piss socked old git. Basically I agree with most of that but the government cannot be trusted with the public’s safety as 30 released killers have been free to kill again in just ten years. If life means life that’s deterrent enough. Sadly it isn’t hence why I vote for.
All those wanting the death penalty would soon think again if it was for one of their loved ones. Even if they were 99% guilty...you'd cling onto the 1% for dear life. Talk is easy...put in practice and you'd all be in tears
Yep - I agree with Ginge about how we'd feel if one of our relatives was murdered but what about the Bentley family?
And on the other side I reckon if any of those who don’t want it, woke up tomorrow to find out that a man had abducted, raped and brutally murdered their daughter, they’d probably be one of the last to object to her killer being zapped in a chair.
Allow me to translate, mate. I understand your tongue, see. What Commie said is: "but you don't understand, my friend." I think it was intended as an ironic repost to Spurly's post.
