Speaking of Bill Spokeshave, he made many Pompey related references you know.

    An obvious example is the reference to the comfortable facilities at Fratton Park on a freezing December Saturday;

"now is the winter of our discount tent"

And obviously anything from "Richard the third" must be appropriate.;)

Oft expectation fails, and most oft there
Where most it promises; and oft it hits
Where hope is coldest, and despair most fits

    (All's well that end well)

Hamlet contains a few apt nuggets of truth:

"Neither a borrower nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend, and borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry"

    Dear Meowthrie

People on here have started going all Shakespereian.

Do you think that's a Good or Bard thing?

    Dear Meowthrie,

I am extremely concerned about the fragile state of mind of a supporter of the team "down the road" who play in red & white stripes. I don't want to embarass him by saying his name - let's just call him LDH to protect his anonymity :emoticon-0105-wink:

He is always drawing attention to our alleged poor attendances at Fratton Park, but now, dare I say it, his team could only attract 7,414 people to St. Marys to watch a feast of football in an important cup game against Preston Reserves.

Imagine the shame this low attendance brings on him and his family, after years of baiting, and claims that his team always pulled in fans in their droves.

How can he show his face in public, to be ridiculed by neighbours and workmates alike, without feeling the immense shame the above mentioned attendance brings on him ?

He needs your kind and gentle help now Meowthrie - don't leave it a moment longer :emoticon-0106-cryin

    Yours sincerely,

    "A concerned fan from Portsmouth"

    Dear Meowthrie,

I too am concerned about our mutual friend, LDH. He will obviously find it difficult to handle the fact that a Saints team with 10 changes from the last league game, beating a team from a lower division, in the early stages of a second tier cup competition, would not command a full house. His frustration will be exacerbated by the fact that his blue neighbours are guaranteed a full first team line-up for every game (not having a second team). Of course, it won't be in this competition, because their First XI lost at home to Barnet, I think, or someone equally huge. <yikes>
I hope he will soon feel better, if his team are drawn against, say, Man Utd, or Arsenal. He might even get to see his First XI play then ... and that chap that his club got £12-15M for. Still what does 15M get you nowadays- it's a years parachute payment, and what does that run to? Not a second team, obviously! :emoticon-0101-sadsm
So , his dilemma is this: should he go to his neighbour's ground, for the next league match, to be part of a crowd which will be at least 50% larger than this 2nd XI event? Or should he stay firm in the conviction that the next league game at his home will be at least 200% larger?

I'm hoping that if he gets too depressed, he can scroll down the league table until he eventually finds Woopert's team- that should give him a laugh!<cheers>

    Dear Meowthrie,

He's at it again ! <doh> :steam: Is there any hope for him, I hear you ask.......

The answer is no, unless you can arrange counselling for him, say with someone like that nice football man Peter Ridsdale (who has time on his hands now he is leaving Plymouth). Mr Ridsdale would be able to reason with him, and ease the burden he must be suffering from the utter, utter shame of his own team's poor support. In say six months time, he could be released back into the wild, and allowed to rejoin NOT606.

Come on Uncle Meowthrie, Christmas is approaching fast, it is after all the time of goodwill, so act quickly, before his words of wisdom are lost to the likes of us mere mortals forever. <wah>

I know you can do it Meowthrie...........<peacedove>

Wow, do you think LDH has a fear of crowds ? He must have been o.k. at the recent match against Preston Reserves then <laugh>

Woopert, are you really sure that you want to keep banging on about attendances? I fear that you are a hiding to nothing!

I think 7,000 is not bad for a reserve game. Championship side v League 1 side.
Maybe in the next round it might be Reserve Championship side v Reserve Premier League side and then a possible 20,000 crowd.
I do like the fact that squad players, players coming back from injury can get a 90 min run out but do we need this Cup when promotion is far more important.

Maybe Pompey have got it right, If your first team is not good enough to beat a League Two side with your first string, then being out off the Cup and concentrating on Not getting relegated Must be right for them.
Lets face it either way its not going to effect there gates.
