I absolutely believe we had a play-offs capable squad this season. Yeah I've thought that too, but that's not the only way to play. If we play like we did back during LJ's good spell (pre-Wolves basically), there's not as much need for the height and strength that we seem to be lacking. Xavi and Iniesta are 5ft 7 and they did alright . Kante is even shorter. I'd like to see Walsh alongside Nagy or Massengo, with the other holding. Don't get me wrong, a 'proper' CM that we haven't seen since the likes of maybe Paul Hartley would be brilliant but they're not the easiest ones to find. Who knows, at just 22 and as (arguably) the best player in League One last year, maybe Walsh could be that man.
Good point, neither Cardiff nor Swansea looked to have a better squad than us, but they both sneaked into the play-offs after the re-start.
Jiffie, I'm beginning to think your RedPrintt with a new account, so he can cry about LJ twice as much....?
Nobody can argue with the 6 wins in 21 games - that’s ultimately what got him fired. What I would say to people who write off his entire tenure as a failure, is that we still, despite that woeful statistic, ended the season in the top half of the league - and he left us in a higher position than we were when he joined, giving us the longest uninterrupted spell in the Championship since Alan Dicks. Ultimately he didn’t make the playoffs and it was right that he went, but I find this LJ-bashing quite sad really - either people don’t understand why 5 years constant championship presence is a good thing, or they have a personal axe to grind. I’m sure those people know which of the 2 categories they fall into. In the meantime I’m hoping that his replacement doesn’t take us down to L1 - but if that does happen (God forbid) then I’ll be fascinated to see how people would certify that as ‘progress’....... Just for the record; I want Hughton as our next manager, but it’s looking increasingly likely it’ll be another inexperienced person trying to cut his teeth with us.
likely it’ll be another inexperienced person trying to cut his teeth with us And if that happens, then the owner and Ashton will wonder where they went wrong AGAIN And they'll only have themselves to blame for being incompetent.
You may have got me there Loathsneyd - I thought we came straight back down after getting promoted in 2008 under John Ward (runners up to Graham Taylor’s Watford). Then Benny took us straight down??? I haven’t googled it so don’t know for sure...
I concede to you Loathsneyd - I was thinking of 1998. I’m older than I thought! I can’t remember those years at all - I can’t imagine they were very good!!
Mate, as you get older you lose the concept of time! Hang on - I thought GJ took us up and then to the playoff final in successive seasons? Did we really stay there for 5 more seasons after that? Under Millie, Delboy and O’Dismal? Wow
Bookies need to balance their books … they take " a race" first thing they do is decide on the the winning book % so assume they settle for 20 -30% [ percentage of the pot they get to keep when all paid out … that's why the odds are swapped around and some bets are placed on peeps not even in the running … like they might might pop in someone like OGS.. at say 6/1 peeps who have bet others at say 1/1 -3/1 may think geez and have a covering bet only 1 can win always the bookie … there has been about a dozen+ put forward only 1 can win … most peeps who bet early on Hughton [ SHORT ODDS might be tempted to have a further nibble … or ….. ]
I really don't believe Holden will get the job. It's fanciful to believe our Board will employ another novice with seemingly similar charisma to Keith Millen. No, they're playing the City fan base and will announce Hughton or Cook in the next few days.
they were on the cusp of announcing last week so everything is not rosy and only a few weeks to the new season
I hope you’re right RP but I’m more inclined to believe you’re wrong. I can’t imagine SL, JL and MA keeping quiet just so they can be entertained by the meltdown on OTIB and the mini-meltdown on here - although I would understand if they were mildly amused by it. We’ll either get Holden, or a manager from one of the lower leagues. I really hope I’m wrong...........
