I first went to the Dell in Sept 1975, but I don`t remember the chocolate boxes (yes, I`m senile) - when were they removed ?
re: Aly Dia. I was at the game and he was absolutely out of his depth. By a country mile. It was basically like having a Tyro League kid on the pitch, chasing after the ball wherever it went. Clueless. And it was very noticeable. re: Jermaine Wright. This guy doesn't deserve the stick he gets. Okay he wasn't brilliant, but he wasn't the worst ever. re: Worst player ever. Without doubt, this award should go to Neil McCann, the "winger" we bought from Rangers for 1.5million
They were never removed.......the chocolate box was the bit in the Milton road end raised above the terraces behind the goal.
As I recall, McCann never got much of a chance to prove himself. And he certainly wasn't worse than Perry Groves.
The whole lot came down to make way for that strange shaped all seater Milton Road stand. I always stood at the Milton Road End between the goal and the players entrance. Once the girls decided they didn't want to go to football anymore the very lovely Mrs Godders and I had season tickets on an west stand bench behind the dugout. Great days.
Oh ruddy heck my memory!!! Of course they did thank you for reminding me St G.......I have an arial view of the dell in a photograph right beside me why oh why did I not look at that.
Excellent post ! I was sat here laughing my head off at the thought of the chap firing his shotgun whilst you stood in a line having a p--- !! Similar thing happened to me once in Rotterdam, but it was a handgun and not a shotgun and these sods werent firing above our heads - luckily they missed and we got away. I have hitch-hiked to away games in the past too and this story really reminded me of it. I hitched a lift to Highbury once and the truck driver went out of his way to drop me right outside the ground ! We drew 1 -1 and Nicky Holmes scored our goal with a screamer at our end ! Some other Saints fans gave me a lift back to Southampton and luckily there was a lock-in at the Oxford that night and i got a pint or 3 after getting back. Great days !
Wrong, McCann played 40 games for us. Perry however, only 15. Alas, you're argument works against you.
All of Jermaine Wright's poor performances are forgiven for the wonderful pass to set up Adam Lallana's first ever goal against West Brom in the Championship survival season in my opinion.
