maybe they thought trck position at Monaco wasn't important? I mean, it's never been mentioned before and with it's wide track and multiple passing places overtaking has never been an issue in the past.

will go down as a royal screw up

I'm going to send my Resume to Merc. Apparently you don't need to be a genius to sit on the pit wall so I should be straight in there.

Feel sorry for the workers back at the factory that provide a decent car for these idiots.

I certainly do believe that us lot on Not606 F1 wouldn't make a cockup like this if we were given a chance to run a team for a weekend.

Autosport have allegedly confirmed that Lewis thought Nico and Vettel had pitted giving a bigger pit window and he felt is tyres were too poor to defend against the faster tyre. I would imagine that he never envisaged losing track position, which is where the team are entirely responsible.

@tgruener: #F1 Lauda revealed, Hamilton complained on radio about his tyres and asked if he should pit. After some discussions he was called in. #AMuS

Lewis Hamilton says he thought Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel were pitting for fresh tyres leading to a joint call between he and Mercedes to stop during a late safety car, a move which cost him victory in Monaco.

Hamilton admits the initial call was to stay out, but a glimpse of one of the track-side screens meant he thought his rivals were stopping.

“You rely on your team and I saw a screen and it looked like the team was out and I thought Nico had pitted,” Hamilton said.

“I couldn't see the guys behind so I thought they had pitted, when the team said to stay out I said 'these tyres are going to drop in temperature' and what I was assuming was these guys were going to be on options and I would be on the harder tyre so they said to pit. So I came in with full confidence that the others would pit."

But wouldn't Mercedes know Rosberg didn't pit? Come on. We are talking to people with commonsense. If Rosberg was in a different team I could understand but they are in the same team.

All it needed was the team to clear up what was happening and letting him know a stop would likely drop him in traffic. Why on earth would you let him come in? Bonkers.

I can't understand it myself but those are Lewis's own words - as confusing as it appears, those are the facts from the horses mouth.

Before the pit stop why were the Mercedes the only pit crew out there preparing for a driver? Hamilton is just trying to be diplomatic. But Toto and the others already admitted they were the ones that miscalculated. And in essence they are the ones that make the call. So even if Hamilton thought the others had pitted the team would have known that they didn't pit so I don't buy that.

If only, having seen what he thought was Nico stopping, Lewis had asked the team "Has Nico come in for tyres?", at which point they would have said no.

In any event, as has been said, the team had probably a bit more visibility of what was happening (and certainly knew Nico hadn't stopped) and should have kept him out.

Maybe they were watching another race or the thought they had 50 more laps to go, whatever it was those guys clearly didn't have a clue what was going on around them.
