My outrage, faux or otherwise, has now shifted from Davy Russell to those of you who think this was ok. Simply put...it wasnt! No need for the guy to be dragged over burning coals for what he did but he most certainly needed to have his wrist slapped.
I have never met Davy but I am sure he is a decent enough fella but on this occasion he let his temper get the better of him and broke what should be a golden rule for anyone in my honest opinion.

There have been a lot of ****ing idiots comment on this thread so far Stick, if they think it's acceptable to punch an animal in the head.
However I can't agree that just a slap on the wrist is acceptable. He needs a good few months ban at the very least for assaulting a horse like that.
The sad thing about it all is if he'd of layed the horse on Betfair to lose and it lost, he'd of been in a lot more trouble than he is now. Betting fraud is clearly a much bigger priority than animal cruelty these days. That's the sad levels racing has now lowered itself to.

Disagree. No lasting damage to the horse but the jockey needs to know that this is not acceptable behaviour and they need to get that message across.
The saddest thing for me is a) the poor way in which the authorities dealt with it and b) the support from many for his actions. When we something that is obviously wrong, say so, deal with it properly and then move on.

Yeah agreed the so called racing community have embarrassed themselves completely here.
It's all well and good being a big clique and sticking together, but most of them are proving that they have little regard for the animals they either ride, train or enjoy watching race.
A better response would have been for Davy Russel to show some remorse and apologise, and the racing community to condem his actions. Unfortunately the complete opposite has happened here.

Prior to Wednesday of this week (6th September), there wasn't a single comment on this thread (last one being 22nd August) regarding his initial caution, whether it be for the jockey or punishment.

This is obviously a very sensitive subject and we are clearly strongly divided in our opinions. Since it has degenerated into a personal slanging match I think it's best we close the thread now. I'm sure everyone has made their feelings clear.
