Well within our style of play there is nothing wrong with pushing the full backs forward. In the 4-2-3-1, when they go forward the two defensive midfielders, or the CBs cover for them. The problem is more the two defensive mids having to go forward and create, rather than the FBs going forward to make width. If you look at the Barcelona front 3, you see Iniesta and Messi, two players that are almost as good (if not better) at making goals as scoring them. There is no need for the DMs to go forward to create, but the full backs still get forward. The other issue is that to cure our defensive woes, we have forgone pressing the ball up the field. I'm not sure how good a plan this is. I think I read somewhere that in a survey, that 35% of goals came from turnovers by the other team, in their own half, which itself was only 16% of possessions gained. Although not pressing as much n the opponents half has made us defensively more solid, it has reduced our chance of scoring significantly.
