Very much so. According to some news outlets, Coote's crime is not so much harbouring these biases and admitting that they affect his decision-making, it's the fact that he allowed himself to be recorded doing it. It's literally that he got caught, and by doing so he made the honourable, respected Howard Webb and the saintly PGMOL the victims in all this: and then there will be a national consensus that Liverpool and its fans are wallowing in their victimhood. Think about that - that's how we do things in this country.
If he was a surgeon (someone he's actually paid well more than) who admitted to hating patients that he'd operated on and completely ****ed up, then he or she would be in prison, never mind sacked. Ffs, even a nurse would be in court if they ballsed-up an injection and it came out that they despised the patient they were dealing with.
I agree with the incompetence, but I think the undoubted venal bias supplements it to a higher level: Chauvanistic and Clouseau-style bumbling idiocy. But let's all feel sorry the guy as he's good for bantz. nah, he's a **** and he's been caught out - I'm afraid now is the time to burn the whole PGMOL on a communal stake (and most of the sports reporters in this country while we're at it). A considered approach, you'll doubtless agree.
I'm not sure what the consequences are for players for racial/nationality slurs or for bringing the game into disrepute which includes remarks on social media. I know the officials are to keep to the same standards but because I can't recall anything like this happening before, I don't even know what the minimum punishment would be.
Opens book on lfc punishments. Suarez 8 match ban for racial abuse of evra. Opens book of non lfc punishments John terry 4 match ban for racial abuse of anton ferdinand. I'd hazard a guess at one week off at best.
Not defending Coote in any way here (I think I've made it clear the level of esteem I have for him), but calling a German a German doesn't seem particularly outrageous to me. It was unnecessary perhaps - calling him a **** would probably suffice, but I sometimes wonder if we have become too liberal in our use of the word "racist".
It seems it maybe outrageous for the FA as they are doing there own investigation into it. Taken from the BBC website "Coote uses Klopp’s nationality to preface one of his comments and FA rules state nationality is one of the references that can lead to an aggravated breach of their rules."
I guess in theory defending it people will say by he is German and he thinks he’s a **** so it’s accurate. But, if you went up to someone and called them a **** they’d be pissed. But if you called them a black **** then it would be classed as racism despite fact you could use the same argument. I guess the logic being it’s being used as a derogatory term, the fact he’s German shouldn’t have any impact on your opinion if you think he’s a **** so adding it seems to suggest that it’s derogatory.
It's not racist in any way. I don't know that anyone has claimed that, have they? As Bindiana has pointed out, mentioning nationality is included as one of the protected characteristics, or whatever they call them, not to be used when arguing with another player, in this case, manager. I agree with Bisc's take on it as being used in a derogatory way. If you think someone's a **** you don't need to add black, white, German, French or any other descriptor, if you do, it's intended to be derogatory imo. It's not outrageous, it's just unnecessary.
Yeah, I understand that - but imo there are historical factors here. Some groups have been victimised by others and derogatory terms have been used to dehumanise them to justify ill-treatment. Such terms are still raw, and I understand that they are deeply hurtful to those groups. I just wouldn't put Germans into that category, that's all. I can see both sides, but I just think that I'd prefer the term racist to be used appropriately, not as a blanket term to describe prejudice. I just think it diminishes the genuine horror of people who have been systematically abused and persecuted.
It's a classic englander comment. I knew a toolmaker from Birmingham area I think. A real old school guy who did precision work but he used to.mouth off like that all the time "I hate the f'n germans but thry make good tools" etc It's one of those national rivalries stemming from war that you won't get shut of. Coote probably got the hump over a lot of managers cos he strikes me as a little cartman wannabe, "you will respect my authority" but it probably triggered him tjat not only was he called out but called out by a German no less. I
There's definitely been a longstanding anti-German feeling in this country. As time goes by and we get further away from war memories, it will probably disappear. "The Germans bombed our chippy" still used by older scousers.
I think Dribs asked the question earlier - then mito mentioned Suarez and John Terry in a comparison. I was just responding to that. It is petty and stupid to qualify an expletive with a nationalistic slur, but not racist imo. I just think it's one of those things the enquiry will jump on, when their real task should be to ascertain whether Coote's prejudice significantly clouds his judgement on the pitch.
It is quite funny that during his very arrogant rant, he calls Jurgen arrogant. The real problem is that since VAR came around, twats like this have a platform…..look at his PGMOL bosses…..they’ve even got their own TV show. Referees should always take a back seat, the second they start getting big egos and arrogant, they’ll do exactly this.
It's not racist, but it is discrimination. As is sitting there allowing yourself to be associated with a fellow cokehead who blurts out "We all hate Scousers" when he summarises what you had said and you don't correct him, you just ask them not to show the video.
the late, great Jack Taylor said that the ideal referee performance was when nobody mentioned them at all after the game. Quite.
