You know me better than that, Swarbs. I never rated him as highly as many did, and not because he played for united. It would appear I'm in a minority. I loathe all the hype. To use your example, Carragher will be respected by people for his football career. Beckham will be lauded partly for his football, partly for his slag Mrs and mainly for his 'brand'. The latter strategy had jack **** to do with him anyway. In common with most professional footballers, he's a thick twat. We just get to hear more of his monotone, meaningless drone because he is what he's been made.

I've a feeling that Beckham will disappear for a while. He's made his money and can now concentrate on his family. Why anyone would criticse a man for making so much money that he can retire so young and enjoy his family I don't know?

Does he still have a contract as ambassador for the MLS? If not perhaps he could do this for the FA. He has already done more to promote English football globally than any other player.

Without Beckham there would probably be no Abramovich at Chelsea or Man City sheikhs. Beckham showed the world that being associated with English football is a great way of promoting yourself and your business.

True. To be honest, in my opinion both Beckham and Carragher deserve equal plaudits for their football career. Both have had long careers making hundreds of appearances, both have played for big clubs and won big trophies, and both of them had relatively specific and limited levels of talent, but have been exemplary professionals on the pitch. Neither of them had the talent of Scholes, Ronaldo, Gerrard etc, but both of them were 100% committed to their respective clubs.

The fact Beckham has had a big brand and media circus off the pitch shouldn't affect the fact that both of them played at a similar level for similar periods of time. Beckham's career has obviously faded of late, but it started earlier and reached its peak much quicker.

And Beckham may be a thick twat, but I doubt Carragher will be winning a Fields Medal any time soon! <laugh>

Beckham was as naturally talented as Gerrard if not better. He is the closest thing England fans have had to a hero since the '66 side, a true gent and great all round bloke. Carragher is a club legend. David Beckham is a living legend. You cant compare the two.

Disagree with you there mate. Beckham didn't have much pace, dribbling ability, tackling ability, couldn't take people on, wasn't great at controlling a game, and had no left foot at all. He was fantastically talented with his right foot when crossing, passing or shooting, but didn't have the all round game of Gerrard, or the ability to control a game of Scholes.

He made the most of what he had with his freekicks and crosses and shooting, but I wouldn't rank him as being as good a player as Gerrard.

More of a football brain than Gerrard. Better passer, FK taker. Gerrard is a selfish player at times. He's certainly no Xavi/Scholes Compare Gerrard for England to Beckham for England and DB has undoubtebly been better. Beckham was world class when at Utd, people seem to forget that. You dont come 2nd in world player of the year if youre not World class

Former England winger Chris Waddle says David Beckham is not one of the top 1,000 players of the last 40 years.

The ex-Manchester United midfielder is retiring at the end of the season.

"I would say he has been a good player, I wouldn't put him down as a great," Waddle, 52, told BBC Radio 5 live.

"You can go down a list of players from the Premier League or the 70s or 80s, whatever you want to do. I'll be honest, Beckham probably wouldn't be in the first 1,000."

Great great dead ball specialist and crosser and even though I never rated becks as a footballer even I wouldn't go that^ far.

Becks is certainly a decent guy, which is more than can be said for a lot of pros, but a better footballer than gerrard, pu lease<doh>

did I say "great dead ball specialist" the best in the world actually with a modern football 100% Far too consistent with his accuracy to be a Roberto Carlos

I will say his goal v Deportivo was one of the best you'll see..

Dunno about better football brain - neither of them really compared to Xavi or Scholes for that. And for England I don't think either of them stands out as superior. You are right about the passing, FKs and Gerrard's selfishness, but Gerrard is also much more dynamic and athletic and able to have more of an influence on the overall game. Beckham is more of a specialist, probably better at what he does, but not able to make as much of an impact in as many areas as Gerrard.

And Gerrard has been world class for Liverpool at times. You don't come 3rd in WPOTY, win UEFA Club Footballer of the Year and feature in the World XI three years in a row if you aren't world class.

Im basing my opinions as an England fan who has been to nearly every England game since about '95. Beckham was way better and significant for England than Gerrard has ever been. If anything Gerrard sort of hindered England by being in Scholes spot and not allowing us to base our team around Lampard, who personally I prefer to Gerrard too.

Beckham gave me some of my best England moments. Argie pen, Greece freekick. He was also truly commited to England as captain. gerrard has again proven he doesnt give a **** by having his operation early so he cant play AS CAPTAIN for the two upcoming friendlies.

So anti Liverpool it's funny, Everyone was\is better than Gerrard now? <laugh>. What you fail to understand is Gerrard and Beckham played in different areas of the pitch, played different games altogether and cannot be compared at all<ok>

To be fair, that was the softest red card for violent conduct I have ever seen.

the poor lad has been controlled by Fergie and then his wife for so long, he finally seems to have grown up and become his own man now. He does give a lot to charity, though if I had all that cash I would also be giving serious wads to charity.

The dress, what independent thinking man wears a dress in public cos his wife tells him it would look cool and he'd be a trend setter. <laugh>

Not really. I loved Owen when he was at Liverpool, think Carra was underused. Big fan of the likes of Mcmannaman, Heskey and rate Gerrard better than pretty much every CM of the last 15 years apart from Scholes, Lampard + Wilshere. Fan of a lot he has done for England but you will find very few of the travelling England fans who prefer him to Sir David Beckham.

You say that yet you have been banging on about Liverpool and it's fans, one post like the above ain't gonna change that<doh>

Prefer is one thing but comparing Becks to a central midfield who plays a totally different game, just so you can say the united player was better is misguided at best.

No one can take anything away from becks, except you by dragging other players into the discussion<laugh>
