Challenge and educate is the key. Punishment sometimes hides the problem it don't make it go away. I think John Barnes covered that topic quite well recently. The media wanted to lynch Liam Neeson for being open about his comments but JB appluaded him. For some odd reason the media think if you drive it underground it will go away, it will not, but what it will do is not give you the opportunity to cure, which is to educate. It's like cancer, if you can see it on the surface of the skin (melanoma), you can get to act on it and cut it out - if it's under the skin, chances are it will spread and you may catch it too late.
He didn't as such. It was a comment about one of the usual pillocks, that they've tried to spin in order to find something to be outraged about.
Don't try and turn this thread into another one of your attention seeking missions. Stick to your thread.
Mine, specifically my son, but this isn't the place to discuss it, that's exactly what he wants. Best kept to the thread he used to claim was the only one he wanted to post on.
I agree when it's based on ignorance and is non abusive. The punishment is for when people do things like monkey chants, throwing bananas or using clear racist insults. When I was a kid (12, 13 ish) I was extremely homophobic. A youth worker (who was gay) said something and I used the word queer as an dig at him. He responded by saying something like "that's ok, you call me a queer , I call you a paki and we can just hate eachother." I have never used any terms like it since, and his approach did more than any ban could have done to change my mind and tbh he stopped me being a homophobic prick and a hypocrite .
Back in the day, a few of the black lads that followed us would go full parody slave when they away fans started with the racist ****. It showed the ignorant ****es making the comments for the tits they are, and generally silenced them for the rest of the game, as even their own fans were laughing at their stupidity and ignorance. Humour can be a great weapon.
Fear of the unknown. Such an underused word to describe prejudices. I think you're a little older than me and homosexuality wasn't as accepted or even as common as it is now, back then. Thankfully, we're knocking down the barriers with prejudices, not just homosexuality mind, with most things. There's still a long way to go but we are definitely going in the right direction and getting there.
Agreed ... unfortunately taking the piss can be difficult if you are feeling threatened though. Took my eldest and a friends son to a spurs portsmouth semi final when she was 12. A group of pompey fans got on the tube and one was making loads of "jokes" about muslim terrorists and then started mouthing of to my mates son about him "looking queer." He kept saying it was a joke like pissheads do so I asked one of his mates who had his slightly older daughter with him what he'd do if some bloke started on her...in the end they tried to shut him up but I had to get in his face to make them pull him the **** away. Obviously as they dragged him off he got mouthier. There was no way of using humour there Another time bloke outside a pub in the centre of London started on me (with all his mates there). He screamed "I hate ****ing pakis" as I drew level. Normally I think something but just walk on cos of being out numbered but my mouth reacted faster than my brain so I said "stop doing it then"...his mates pissed themselves and he tried to go for me but they told him to stop being a prick and apologised to me for his behaviour...tbh in that situation again I think I'd walk on cos of the risk.
Mate, never pass up the opportunity of a smart arse one liner - even if it means the chance of a kicking. (Actually I’d probably have kept my mouth shut. Sounds like you were performing a public service by saying it though)
If I am honest, when he said "I hate ****ing pakis" I wish I had said "I weren't offering you the chance" ... would of really ****ed him off
Would have confused the **** out of him if you replied "so do I, I'm Indian" (not meant as fact, just to show the ignorance)
My family are from Trinidad and Tobago in the West indies. Trying to explain that Trinidad was owned by Spain and then by Britain so had slaves and indentured servants from India (as it was then), China and Africa so my family are a real mix which is why I look Asian whereas other members of my family looked west Indian doesn't really flow off the tongue Would be like giving the ignorant ****ers a joint history and geography lesson
I had a Sikh mate who git into a fight with a lad who called him Paki. He was not fighting him for his racism but his inaccuracy Not sure how this will go down but I think we have gone full circle in some of the arguments/points of discussion. I remember reading here on a few occassions the notion of foreigners and living in ghettos/with their own. Now I have had the chances to live in majority white and majority African carribean communities. Suffice to say I got a lot of **** in both, being Pakistani. The "resolution" came in eventually fighting back, literally. The increase in numbers of Pakistani folk in both areas lead to initial increase in tensions and the peace. The initial "racists" probably still held their views but hid them but their offspring grew up with ours and got on. Which is imo why these ghettos start. With football, living in stoke, racism never went away. Moving from the Victoria ground to the brittania didn't remove racism. It simply meant there were no foreign businesses etc to smash up where the new ground is. A key reason for the local authourity paying for the ground to be relocated where it is. A kind of out of sight out of mind
Good thread @cini65 A complex topic Fan. "Ghettos" as you've described are a necessity sometimes for the minority. I always believe though that you can reach out and/or fight back with those on the opposite side. But in those instances when you do come together it has to happen both ways otherwise it's never secure. Completely agree about generations. With each next generation I've tended to find things improve. Sadly some events beyond our control and best intentions like 9/11 throw a real spanner in the works on both sides.
Who's Danny Rose? Ok for years calling Keane, either one Paddy/Irish ****/prick/bog trotter but that's just banter maybe Rose is been a bit precious, doubt if it happens in English grounds these days, just saying.
Out of all the posts i've read so far...WTF? Metths you are up there with the worst. You even make videos, you ****ing ******ed, window licking, wasp herding, cum guzzling, ****ing freak We all know others are racist, but i doubt any of them have made a public video showing what an utter ****ing stupid **** they are.
