    I understand what you say sgt, and the dreamer agrees, but the realist in me says there was a reason that public hangings were always so festive and well attended, and I can never get the line the old man said in the documentary 'Grand Prix -the killer years' "we come for the accidents". And to the line "the crash protection around the outside needs improving, I'd say there isn't any, not for the drivers, the only protection is to stop the cars killing spectators.

    I hear ya Migs, but I think there's an element of that in all forms of motor sport. Part of the excitement is knowing that there are in inherent dangers and when you see an overtake that took guts and determination and could have resulted in a spectacular off, you (or at least I) cheer it on.

    That being said, none of us want to see people die but just think of when there is a big accident, It gets played over and over in replay. One that springs to mind was Kubica in Canada.

    F1 is light years ahead of Indy when it comes to safety, no doubt about that and no doubt that something has to be done, but they are quite different animals and the combination of ovals, crazy speed and open cockpits make it hard to truly make safe.
