Gotta say from another viewpoint , I have been VERY impressed with FSG in all this

It seems they have had there fingers on the pulse at ALL times, they are making the key decisions when they need making not when its too late

I think it's pretty evident that he wasn't sacked for simply the transfer dealings...

I happen to wonder if they're looking for a DoF who's more interested in youth development in the Ajax/Bilbao/Barca mould. Comolli doesn't strike me as being that kind of hands-on director so this might be more along the lines for his removal. This is my logical reasoning, but I could be totally wrong!

I know this should really be on the Music Thread but it just seemed appropriate:

You can take Foredeckdave out of the music thread...but you can never take the music thread out of Foredeckdave.

Think this is great!

FSG have made the decisions at the right time, giving us the best chance of improving over the summer. These guys are so organised and geared towards success that eventually we will improve and get beack to the higher echelons of world football.

I dont have a clue who they intend to bring in, but I strongly believe they will be looking for REAL quality players over the summer to put us in as good a position as possible for next season.

I love their ruthlessness

Supposedly John Achterberg (GK coach) and Natalie Wignall (In-house lawyer) have also left the club today...

Hope Rafa doesn't come back, though he does seem to be lurking at every opportunity to say something good about us. Funny that, considering he never said anything like that when Inter came calling or when he wanted out.

A Director of Football (very common in Eastern European teams and publicly owned/fan owned teams) has a unique job. The manager is responsible for the motivation, tactics, and team selection of a team. In many clubs (once again, my area of expertise being Eastern Europe) the manager is also the coach and trains with the team, teaching them the footballing abilities. The directors on the other hand, sign cheques, set budgets, advertising, sponsorship, stadium upkeep, etc etc.

What the DoF usually does and the reason why they are brought in is to bridge the gap between the footballing side of the club and the business side of the club. He is the one that relays the managers concerns and wishes to the Board of Directors and he is the one that assists the board in understanding the footballing side (identifying which scouting prospects are good enough, how much money a player is worth, etc.)
Comolli was probably brought in due to FSG's need for a football interpreter of sorts, someone to bridge that gap. They couldn't understand Kenny's footballing needs so Comolli was brought in to help them communicate. They have two options when things go sour. Fire the DoF, or fire the manager. Quite obviously, if he has been fired, the board either feels that he hasn't done his job properly or they have found someone better. If we look at our signings we can see where the problem is. Comolli's fault in this was setting the prices of players and relaying this to John Henry and Tom Werner.

tl;dr The board blames Comolli for the failed signings and not Dalglish.

well guys in all honesty i am unsure as to whether its good bad or indifferent. i've not thought about it enough.

there are three ways to think about it.

1. its bad and our summer is screwed

2. its good and our summer will be better

3. we'll muddle through but sacking comolli now makes little sense as he's been working on the summer since the end of january (i hope to hell anyway) surely we'd have an idea of who we'd want via kenny anyway so its not a big deal but surely you get rid in feburary not april.

i'm totally undecided whether its good or bad or what it means frankly. much needs to become clearer around the clubs future and this is just one more thing to add to the pile.

The David Dein rumours really picking up - supposedly Henry spoke to him a while back about some form of role within Liverpool but now that Comolli is gone, he might get offered something slightly different. Dein might consider this since a return to Arsenal isn't looking likely any time soon.

I'm aware that Dein held a high up position in Arsenal during their transformation in the late 90's and early 2000's, and that he was responsible for bringing in Wenger, but after that I'm not sure what he actually did for Arsenal (I don't like wikipedia as a source). Anyone know much about him?

Comolli paid the price for some players yet to shine, my verdict on his signings.
Carroll. Overpriced but he didn't set his price tag. Not had any service of sorts.
Downing. Gives us width when on the left, not enough pace and doesn't take players on, unlucky has hit the post a lot.
Hendo. Lots of energy, but looks nervous when he plays, is still only 21.
Enrique. The guys a brute and unlucky not to score. To think that we had kinchesky in that position .
Bellamy. Class. Shame he isn't 23. Need to keep him fit and ask him to teach Raheem sterling a few things.
Doni. Unlucky not to get any games. Pepe has not been his usual self.
Coates. Class player who should play more.
Adam. Great start to the season but not the dead ball specialist we bought. Affected by injury to Lucas. Plays in gerrards shadow as both want to take fre kicks and corners.

Just received a text from a Bluenose mate of mine: 'Just checking - is the departure of Damien Comolli Stewart Downing's first assist of the season?' Bring on Saturday! GKRK

It amazes me how Liverpool are repeatedly pressing self destruct, why do all this sacking business 2 days before an FA Cup semi, great preparation! what a morale boost for the squad to finally be told by its own club, its overpriced and not good enough! Another American owner without a clue. <doh>

Good luck today....you're going to need it. <ok>

Was a shock than he's gone now. It adds to the theory that maybe Kenny was not in charge on signing.

In my opinion one of them would of had to be dismissed, and it seems they see him as at fault rather than Kenny.

I'm pleased because I don't rate him, and like most, questioned the outcome when he arived at the club.

Would be nice if his role could be disbanded.

Maybe I've been a bit harsh on Kenny.

This from The Daily Mash (OK, so it's a bit late....) GKRK

Comolli resigns after winning Nigerian lottery
13-04-12
DAMIEN Comolli has resigned from his post of chief moneyburner at Liverpool FC after winning $40 million via email.

He can hardly believe his luck

To prove his former occupation he has provided the Nigerian prince running the lottery with Liverpool’s bank details and has posted the deeds to his house as proof of address.

Football’s biggest spendthrift will set up a company with the proceeds, investing in new business opportunities such as harvesting icebergs for bottled water and research into magic beans.

Comolli said: “The board very generously offered to exchange my tiny payoff cheque for this big bag of shiny copper coins so I’m all set to go.
“I want to thank everyone at Liverpool for the opportunity to make so many people happy, especially managers of other clubs I used to visit with a cheque book in one hand and a drawing of a footballer in the other.”

During his time at Liverpool Comolli oversaw some of the biggest transfers in the club’s history, including the £35M paid to Newcastle for Andy Carroll despite the club’s insistence that they only wanted £1M for him.

He was known as an innovator at the club, with his ‘Bring & Buy’ scheme - where other clubs would bring the players they didn’t want to the car park at Anfield and Comolli would buy them - being responsible for Jordan Henderson.

Comolli said: “Leaving all this behind does bring a tear to my eye, although that could be the £300 aftershave I bought on the way to work off a chap selling stuff out of a suitcase.”
