Like Brough Tiger, I have been to Champions’ Day the last couple of years - specifically to see Frankel. I would not expect that it is going to be crowded this year as there is no superstar attraction. I went in the normal Grandstand enclosure (a hundred yards from the winning post) and the advance tickets were no more exorbitant than other top race days. I will not be going this year but that is down to my loathing of the carbuncle that is Ascot rather than the quality of the racing. I got an advanced train ticket from Doncaster to Ascot. The train out to Ascot from Waterloo and back was standing room only with racegoers as it was the normal Reading service with no extra coaches because the railways are run by incompetents who do not plan for busy days.
You will be relieved to hear that on Channel 4, Charlton Heston has rescued Jack Hawkins from drowning and has managed to get four horses to win a race, although he can expect a lengthy whip ban. Meanwhile on BBC2, Sophia Loren is pokerfaced, Herbert Lom is sinister and Charlton has managed to make a horse disappear during a joust by colliding with it. No Edelweiss today... O’Meara one from two so far at Ripon but looking around at the results it does not look like too bad a day for punters, unlike it usually pans out on Bank Holidays. Expect that Patrick Mullins is riding in the Amateurs’ Derby at Epsom for the kudos because there is obviously no money in it for him. Perhaps he knows that his dad’s horses are a bunch of donkeys and should all be avoided today.
Can't beat the old Bank Holiday television...I have never watched either "classic" and missed both today mowing the lawns. Studied the cards briefly for 30 odd minutes and nothing remotely interests me. Shocking offerings and more really is less today. GL anyone having a go. Does anyone know if that amateur race at Epsom used to worth considerably more and was it not televised terrestrially a few years ago?
Great Call ROTO, I thought he was vulnerable today especially to the Clive Cox horse but left them for dead
Even better - I just checked my Betvictor account, and somehow I seem to have made the same bet twice - i'd have been well sick if it was a loser, but thankfully it's Victor on the losing end Also doubled it with PN's choice at Newc ...... come on Zarosa!
I know I bang on about the free bets but anyone who backed ROTO's magnificent selection has a free bet in the Newcastle 5.10
First of all Thanks again ROTO superb tipping as always! I know a lot of you like a footy gamble and bet365 have the £50 free bet offer running once again tonight. What we thinking lads? I'm a big united fan but I fear for us against mourinho and I am thinking of doing 50 on the draw pre match and 50 on Chelsea at decent odds in play.
Normally I would be quite happy to see an old-timer win the same race for the fourth time, but Osteopathic Remedy’s victory at the expense of Robert The Painter was unwelcome as my sole bet of the day is a loser. Just goes to show that anything that I back from David O’Meara’s yard is hopelessly handicapped no matter how many it has won. Well done to Patrick Mullins on winning the Amateur’s Derby with Brighton specialist Beacon Lady. I left it alone because although it had not been out of the first two in seven races its five previous wins have all been beside the seaside on ground that was good or faster. Clearly it likes downhill tracks!
Chelsea are the better side but its at Old Trafford so the draw would probably be safe bet but if it were me I'd take the gamble on a Chelsea win
