I casually follow Torquay's results (and news) and they sold some of their best players to Stockport when they were promoted back to the EFL, and Danny Wright who was their best striker has moved to a team playing in the National League South.

Torquay, a bit like Carlisle, Barrow and other out of the way football places, suffers with it's location which is somewhat remote for a lot of players to consider moving to.

I hope GJ can turn it around.

Take your point Angelic, however Plymouth seem to have cracked it.

I think Plymouth has the advantage of the M5 linking it with the rest of civilisation, and also has a considerably bigger and younger permanent population than Torquay has.

It's dual carriageway from Torquay to Exeter so I'm not sure that Plymouth is better connected.
Your point about the population size and make up of Plymouth makes a lot of sense and why they're doing considerably better.

I thought Plymouth might go backwards after Ryan Lowe left for PNE, but they're flying under Schumacher and are getting 16,000 crowds too.
League 1 has a lot of big clubs in it this season, so if he can even achieve a playoff spot he will have done very well.

They also draw a lot of fans from Cornwall as it's the closest Football league club.

from Exeter it has dual carriage all the way into the heart of Cornwall [ a few places in Cornwall still single? ] Torquay has dual into Newton Abbot area then quite a mixture through to Torquay dual carriage / some without barriers going through built ups with roundabouts etc. works well for Exeter city as well! whereas Torquay to Plymouth road wise not so easy! But YES catchment for Plymouth is more sustained

Better than nothing, would have been better had Brownhill, Webster or Kelly been sold on though

Interesting that the fee was spread over several years. I wonder how many other deals Ashton constructed like this. This might help answer the question I always had in where all the money went from the player sales, if we were still posting big losses. It kinda makes sense now, if we paid in full for players we bought, but only got instalments for those we sold, then we would have a financial hole. That said, income from those transfers must still be trickling in and would now help offset FFP rules?
