Alan Pardew hopes to beat his rivals to the Tigers' centre-back and captain by offering £4m plus Steven Taylor as a replacement

Newcastle have joined the chase for Hull skipper Curtis Davies.

The centre-back is in demand, with Sunderland and Everton both ready to pay £8million to prise him out of the Yorkshire club.

But Toon chief Alan Pardew plans to tempt the Tigers with a player-plus-cash offer for the former Luton, West Brom and Aston Villa defender.

Pardew is willing to pay City £4m and throw in £4m-rated Steven Taylor as a ready-made replacement for Davies.

Taylor’s days with the Magpies are numbered as Pardew sets about re-vamping his back-four for next season.

Pardew sees Davies, whose stunning form for Hull last term came close to earning him an England call-up, as the perfect partner for skipper Fabricio Coloccini at the heart of Newcastle’s rearguard.

The Argentina international, 32, has signed a new deal that will keep him at St James’ Park for at least another year.

Taylor, 28, who has two years left on his contract, is also a target for QPR, but his preference would be to stay in the North – and Hull would be an attractive option.

Tigers boss Steve Bruce, though, is desperate to hang on to Davies, 28, and will fight tooth and nail to keep him at the KC Stadium.

If true this would be a good deal for us, in my opinion. Davies has been a late bloomer, but has come off a very good season at Hull and would definitely represent an improvement on Taylor. I'm skeptical of the accuracy of this rumour, as we rarely sign a player who is 28 or over. It makes sense on so many levels, which is why I think it probably wont happen. Offloading Taylor and his high wages (in relation to ability) and acquiring a superior player of the same age, would literally mean one in one out - Davies presumably commanding a similar wage. Caulker (22) & Shawcross (26) would obviously represent a closer fit to our transfer policy, but would fall outside of our budget, as far as transfer fee and wages goes.

I must say, of the players that I thought could be available and that were realistic targets for us, Davies is one that I would definitely have liked to see at our club. I really think he would be a good signing.

That said, I sincerely doubt any of it's true and I'll go back to my pessimistic view of our transfer dealings this summer.
